Principal's Report

Thank you to everyone for your support during the early part of this term. Unfortunately, I had a fall on the first day of the recent school holidays – on my morning walk along a very well used footpath! I can now say that not all footpaths are smooth or safe. A special thank you to everyone who moved up into new positions while I was off campus – in particular Mrs Wills (acting Principal), Mrs Lloyd (acting Deputy Principal/Senior campus) and Ms Winnett (acting Deputy Principal/Inclusion).
As we approach the remainder of Term 2 there are quite a lot of activities/events scheduled for our students and staff: teachers from all year levels will be released to meet together with our Head of Department/Curriculum and Coach to plan for Term 3 ( this will include moderation of expectations); Readers Cup; Free Dress Day; Southside Beginner Band Camp and Southside Junior Strings Camp; State Aerobic Championships; Senior Athletics days and well as a number of class/year level activities to celebrate learning. School finishes on 27 June with Semester 1 report cards emailed home that afternoon. Please ensure that your family information held at the school is current so that we can email these to you at your current address. Unfortunately, we still have ‘bounce backs’ from invalid email addresses.
I would also encourage you, and your family, to join the P&C on Saturday 14 June for the Bush Dance. This will be a wonderful time for the Camp Hill community to come together and celebrate while also supporting our generous P&C.
A date claimer for early in Term 3 is the Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday 22 July. Watch out for information on this night. I have been delighted with the positive feedback we have received from these evenings.
I would like to congratulate our students on their engagement with their learning and their ability to ‘have a go’ with new learning/activities – the growth since the beginning of the school year has been most impressive. Well done.
Take care
Deborah Driver

Curriculum
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures and National Reconciliation Week
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures is one of the three cross-curriculum priorities embedded in the Australian Curriculum. This priority provides opportunities for all students to deepen their knowledge of Australia by learning about the world’s oldest continuous living cultures.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority engages with Australian First Nations Peoples’ knowledges, experiences, values and perspectives. Through the Australian Curriculum, students learn that contemporary First Nations Australian communities are strong, resilient, rich and diverse. It also allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to see themselves and their cultures reflected in the curriculum.
This priority area is embedded across all learning areas and is intentionally and explicitly rooted in many of the Units of Work throughout each term.
Throughout the year, significant events are observed, such as National Reconciliation Week (NRW). This major event, observed annually from May 27 to June 3, is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
It is a significant time for Queensland schools to engage in meaningful education and activities that promote reconciliation. At Camp Hill, we use this week to continue to learn about the shared histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and explore how individuals can contribute to reconciliation.
This year all classes have included age-appropriate lessons and activities to explore this year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, which reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.
National Reconciliation Week has been acknowledged on parade, in two ways. Mrs Amedee spoke to the students about the connection between this significant event and the Habit of Mind “Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations”. Also, Mrs De San Miguel shared story books with the students that relate to NRW in age-appropriate ways. Finding Our Heart, was shared on Senior Campus parade. In this children’s book the author, Thomas Major, explores the Uluru Statement from the Heart, promoting understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
Many Camp Hill staff have watched a webinar on the Narragunnawali platform https://www.bigmarker.com/narragunnawali/nrw-2025-bridging-now-to-next. This webinar features a conversation with Reconciliation Australia's CEO, Karen Mundine, and provides information and insights shared by the Narragunnawali team and unpacks the 2025 National Reconciliation Week (NRW) theme, “Bridging Now to Next".
By engaging in activities that align with this year's theme, "Bridging Now to Next," we not only honour the past but also commit to building a more inclusive and united future. Through intentional curriculum integration and meaningful discussions, we aim to foster a deeper understanding and respect among all students, contributing to the ongoing journey of reconciliation in Australia.

Under 8S Funday
Under 8’s Fun Day: A Celebration of Early Childhood
Last Wednesday, our school was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated Under 8’s Fun Day—a special event dedicated to recognising the importance of play in the early years of learning.
The school grounds came alive with the arrival of an army truck, police car, police van, ambulance, and fire truck, much to the delight of our young learners. Students explored these incredible vehicles, spoke to real-life heroes, and learned about the vital roles they play in our community.
In addition to the emergency services display, students enjoyed a wide range of engaging activities including face painting, sensory trails, cubby house building, and creating nature wands and many more. These experiences highlight the value of play as a powerful tool for learning, fostering creativity, problem-solving, confidence, and social connection in young children.
We would like to sincerely thank all the teachers, teacher aides, year 6 leaders and grounds staff who worked behind the scenes to make the day a wonderful success. Thanks also to the many parents/carers who were able to attend. The memories made will stay with our students for years to come.

PREP
BEING ORGANISED
WE TRY OUR BEST TO BE GOOD LISTENERS.
It is important to listen to others when they are talking.
We listen to our family members, our teachers and our friends.
In the classroom, we listen and put up our hands when we want to talk.
Listening to instructions is an essential part of being organised. It is just as important as setting goals, doing our best and making sure we have enough time to get things done by not wasting time.

The students saw what happened to Monkey when he did not listen and follow instructions in the ‘Behaviour Matters’ book, ‘Monkey Needs To listen.’
Oscar and Olivia Organisation teach us about the importance of listening.
Monkey learnt that listening carefully means thinking that “It is important to listen to my teacher extra carefully when something important is being explained.

Semester 1 Lytton District Sport Trials
Term 2
Our school is one of many in the Lytton District school sport cluster. Students turning 10-12yrs old in 2025 (Born 2013, 2014 and 2015) have the opportunity to nominate in Lytton District sport trials, which is the first stage of representative school sport. If successful, students then compete in the Met East regional trial. If students are selected in a Met East team, they play in the QLD state carnival.
Trials can be during or after school hours. Please note that these are not participation-based opportunities and students at these trials would need to have a high level of ability and/or experience to be involved. Schools are usually limited to four nominations for each district sport trial. Transport to and from these trials is the responsibility of the parents/carers.
Below are the considerations when nominating:
- Is the correct age to trial (Born 2013, 2014 or 2015) - students turning 12 would usually get priority over students who are younger
- Has prior playing experience and skills in the interested sport
- Has the physical skill level and ability to trial in a representative opportunity
- Meets safety suitability - some students turning 12yrs old have developed physical size. Students under 12yrs old (Born 2014 and 2015) would need to demonstrate the ability to compete with older students at a representative trial.
Term 2 Sport Trials:

Cricket - Girls | Tuesday, June 17 | Tuesday June 3 |
Cricket - Boys | Thursday, June 19 & Friday, June 20 | Thursday June 5 |

Queensland Symphony Orchestra excursion
On Friday, 23rd May, 85 students from Year Four to Year Six, all of whom are studying instrumental and/or choral music at CHSI&PS, attended a wonderful concert by Queensland Symphony Orchestra at QPAC.
They travelled in and out by bus, enjoyed the concert, and before they boarded the bus to come back to school, had a quick photo with Brenda Sullivan, one of the QSO’s wonderful violinists, and grandmother of Evie and Joe.
How lucky we are to be able to attend concerts like this. Thanks to parent helpers on the day (Jo, Jill and Lisa); teachers who attended, organised and supported; and parents/carers who enabled their children to attend.
Here are responses from some of the students who attended.
“Pirates of the Caribbean was amazing because the theatre lit up with the best light show which I was not expecting.” Kaylee T (6C)
“My favourite piece was Pirates of the Caribbean- the Curse of the Black Pearl. I loved how the tempo and beat changed throughout the song, it brought out a lot of different feelings.” Harrison T (4D)
“I loved the cello mimicking the Chinese instrument (the erhu) in the Kung Fu Panda song.” Zoe P (4E)
“I enjoyed how they used all the instruments to create the mood of the song for Pirates of the Caribbean.” Mia H (4E)
“I enjoyed the performance more than last year because the hosts made the experience way more fun and enjoyable. It was interesting to learn how music can make you think different things, and how it makes a massive impact on movies or TV shows.” Darcy D (6D)
“This was the best orchestra concert ever!” Alisha C (5A)
“I liked it a lot, especially the energy of all of the players in the Pirates of the Caribbean piece.” Hana F-D (5A)
“It was one of the best school excursions, I really enjoyed seeing the trumpet (the instrument I am learning) being played.” Aanya S (4C)
“I really loved the piccolo during Pirates of the Caribbean because it sounded smooth. The concert lights really added to the atmosphere.” Xavier B (5D)
“I enjoyed the entire performance, but my favourite part was when we had to sing along with the orchestra to “Batman!” It was fun and interactive.” Jenna V (6A)
“A memorable experience was listening to the sounds of Pirates of the Caribbean and Batman. Pirates of the Caribbean started in a really high key but then moved to a lower key which was when everyone quickly guessed which movie the music featured. We were also shown how the composer, Hans Zimmer, altered the tempo and a few notes to make the new theme song which everyone recognizes as “BATMAN!”” Georgia H (6D) & Ruby H (4D)
“I loved watching the conductor and how expressive and animated she was. I also especially loved the music from the Pirates of the Caribbean, and how instruments were added as the song went on. It made it easy to imagine being on a boat!” Addie K (6B)
“It was EPIC. Out of all the shows I’ve seen while at Camp Hill - this was THE BEST. Pirates of the Caribbean was my favourite, the light show really added to the atmosphere and made it more dramatic. All the players were amazing, but the cello soloist during Kung Fu Panda was incredible!” Lincoln H (6B)
“I love it all - very amazing! My favourite was the middle section of the Lion King song where lights and percussion evoked a lot of excitement! The orchestra went crazy, it was exhilarating.” Elliot SH (4B)
“I really enjoyed the concert, particularly the Lion King performance which I thought evoked strong emotion and a vivid connection to the storyline.” Monti M (6C )
“The concert was very entertaining, with really impressive and expressive pieces that weren't too long. Lots of cool lights added to the mood of each piece. The comperes talked about the pieces, introduced the different families of orchestral instruments, and were altogether very engaging for the audience, especially children.” Arabella J (6C)

Library News

National Simultaneous Storytime – Truck Cat
Last Wednesday, on Fun Day, our Junior Campus participated in a nationwide read of the book Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel. Our Year 1 and 2’s were fortunate to have a sunny morning to bring their lunches to the rubber matting and listen while they ate their lunch. Always such a magical moment of literary joy. Over 2 million children enjoyed the Truck Cat story on that day, all across Australia.
Bookworms
Our Year 1 and 2 students have the choice to visit the Junior Library some lunchtimes to read and play in an alternative setting to the playground. With the milder weather we have been taking Bookworms outside to the playground. A large mat, a box of books and time to just read and talk with a friend. Bliss!!!

Premier’s Reading Challenge
It is Week 6 so we are 3 weeks into our Premier’s Reading Challenge. Some of our junior students have read one book a day and are finished and have their forms in already. One book a day shared with a grown up is all it takes for our P-2 students.
Our Year 3-6 students actually have to read themselves. One small chapter books a week should be manageable for most of our readers. Students can also read magazines, graphic novels, picture books and information texts.
Make it happen by
- having a screen free hour or two every afternoon
- borrowing some books from the library and leave them on the table for your children to find
- have some books in the car for those waiting times at sport or music lesson pick ups
- start a whole family reading time – just 20 minutes after dinner or before bed to wind down and enjoy a book

Reading Explorers Book Club
Online orders due 8th June. https://readingexplorers.com.au/
Did you know our school receives credits at 20% of books purchased in each issue of Book Club? This is a much needed boost for our Libraries – allowing us to purchase new books and latest releases to keep our students reading. There is only 1 issue a term, with orders packed individually for your family, and delivered to school.
When ready to order you can click on the online book title and it will take you to a review of book details. See these example reviews below.

Research Skills
Our Year 6 students are working on their research skills. Last week all classes learned about Boolean Operators AND, OR and NOT and used them to widen or narrow their keyword search terms when searching online in our Library Catalogue.
Happy reading,
Peta de San Miguel
Teacher Librarian
