27 June 2025
Principal's Report
After a remarkably busy term we have reached the final day of Semester 1, 2025. Each year the school provides four opportunities for reporting on student learning to families: Written report cards in Term 2 and Term 4 and Parent-Teacher Conferences in Term 1 and Term 3.
Semester 1 report cards will be emailed home to all families on Friday 27 June. Mrs Vokes (Head of Department/Curriculum) recently provided information in the school newsletter about the changes to Camp Hill report cards. I encourage you to refer to this article for clarification of changes to previous reporting. I always encourage families to look at their child/ren’s Attainment and Effort results across subjects assessed. I know as a parent, and grandparent, the Effort level is always a great starting point for discussion with your child about their understanding of their learning.
The Term 3 Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Tuesday 22 July. This evening gives families the opportunities to further explore their child’s learning journey with the class teacher. Please ensure you book your time on the SOBS program.
Term 2 saw the biannual P&C Bush Dance which is a major event of our school calendar. I would like to acknowledge the time/effort/creativity that goes into hosting this event. It is always a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community.
In 2026 the school will celebrate 100 years of education in the Camp Hill community. The Camp Hill State School was established on 1 July 1926 and the Camp Hill Infants School in 1956. The Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School was established in 2007. As we lead into the centenary year there will be numerous celebrations and many opportunities to share our history with our families. The photo below is from the first day of school (1926): What a journey from 1926 to 2025!

I would like to thank Mrs Fiona Lloyd and Mrs Leanne Fowler for their contributions to the school's Physical Education program, including representative sports, this term. Our students are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to explore their interests, and talents, across a diverse range of sports programs.
Term 3 will start with a number of activities that include: a visit from Queensland Police Service Pipes and Drums; Junior Sports Day; Parent-Teacher conferences; Free Dress Day (Multicolour); a visit from Queensland Opera (Years 3 – 6); Life Education (Years 1 – 4); Year 2 Street Science and Year 4 Landfill excursion - all in the first 3 weeks of the new term!
I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing everyone when school resumes for Term 3 on Monday 14 July.
Take care
Deborah Driver

Growing Through Measurement: How Your Child’s Learning Builds from Prep to Year 6
Aligned with Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
In Term 3, Measurement will part of the Mathematics teaching and learning in all year levels. This strand of Mathematics helps students understand key concepts they’ll use for life — from telling the time and using calendars, to measuring length, mass, area, and volume. In the updated Version 9 curriculum, students build these skills step by step through the primary years, deepening their understanding and applying it in real-world situations.
Measurement in Everyday Life
Measurement isn’t just something children learn at school — it’s all around us. Helping your child understand and apply measurement at home:
- Reinforces classroom learning
- Builds confidence
- Connects maths to the real world
How You Can Support at Home
You don’t need to be a maths expert to help! Here are simple ways to support your child’s learning in Measurement:
🧁 Cooking Together – Let your child measure ingredients, set timers, and adjust quantities (e.g. double a recipe). This builds skills in mass, volume, and time.
📏 Measure Around the House – Use a tape measure to check heights of furniture or people, or plan a garden bed together using metres and centimetres.
⏰ Talk About Time – Involve your child in reading clocks, planning a schedule for the day, or working out how long something will take.
📆 Use Calendars and Timetables – Talk about upcoming events, count days, or read a school or transport timetable together.
🛠️ DIY Projects – Involve older students in projects that require estimating and measuring length, area, or volume.
📐 Ask Thinking Questions – “How could we measure this?” or “Which unit would work best here?” encourages problem-solving.
Measurement is a skill that connects deeply to everyday life. With a little curiosity and involvement, your child can gain confidence and purpose in their mathematical thinking — and you’re an important part of that journey.

Parking
Please consider the safety of all members of our Camp Hill community when parking around our school grounds.
One person’s thoughtless actions can have a profound impact upon the safety of others.
Please DO NOT drive into the school grounds unless you are authorised to do so – such as Disability Parking.
Thank you for your support for our community.

You Can Do It

Getting Along
It is always good to learn how to get along with others and the students have been learning plenty from Gabby Get Along.
Here are some of her best suggestions: -

Where possible, it is ideal to be able to give behaviour-specific feedback immediately after children demonstrate getting along behaviour.
Some examples of this kind of feedback can include:
# “You helped everyone clean up. You are a real team player.”
# “Thank you for letting Josie join the group.”
# “That is great. You solved a problem by talking things out.”
# “Doesn’t it feel good not to get too angry.”
# “You are working well together.”

Library News
Readers’ Cup
Our Readers’ Cup team have done it again!! Another 2nd place!
On Wednesday 11th June, five very excited Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Somerville House to compete in the Brisbane Central district competition against 30 other local schools. They enjoyed listening to author Charlotte Barkla speak about her books. Their hard work and commitment paid off with stunning results, coming second by just one question. The team worked together to read all five books and remember so many facts from each book.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Well done to all the students who have completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge before the end of Term 2. Our junior students should have no problem reading or listening to 20 books. Year 3-6 may need to channel their Commitment and visit the library to keep finding great books that interest and inspire them. Please return all signed completed forms to either Office or Library.
Wide Reading
In Library last week we used the analogy of comparing fast food to fine dining restaurants. Some books are a quick read which may fill a gap but not stay with you forever, while others are a literary experience which will activate your emotions and stay with you long after closing the book. Think back to the books you enjoyed as a child. How did they make you feel? If your children not reading those books which trigger an emotional response, they may not be experiencing the joy that stories can bring, and hence not want to read.
Encourage wide reading by visiting a bookshop or library, attending a book launch, listening to author podcasts, reading aloud a great family read. Limiting screen time and offering books as an alternative may assist – bring back the bedtime story! There are many great events on during the holidays at bookshops and council libraries. Your Kids Next Read podcast has a selection of First Chapters read by the author which may encourage children to seek out the book and finish reading.
We have many of those titles in our Senior Library.
Storybox Hub Library
Holidays away sometimes make accessing a story difficult – but not with our school subscription to Storybox Library. There are over 600 Australian stories for your family to enjoy for free on any device. You will need to use our school login to access these. Login – chips Password – storybox. Please do not share this paid subscription outside of our school community. It is also available with most public library memberships for free. Go to https://storyboxhub.com/

Music
The Musical: Seussical Jr
What an inspiring few weeks it’s been!
The audition process for our upcoming musical has been nothing short of incredible. The panel has been blown away by the talent, passion, and courage shown by every student who stepped forward — making the final casting decisions exceptionally challenging.
The casting for the main characters was, as we’re sure you’re aware, announced this week. We will announce more about the smaller roles ASAP. While only a limited number of students can take on lead roles, every student who auditioned has truly shone in their own way. The depth of talent at our school is remarkable, and we look forward to showcasing this through dynamic ensemble work and a vibrant production that celebrates everyone involved. We can't wait to get started next term — it's going to be a fantastic journey!
If you have a child who wishes to be in Seussical Jr and you’re not receiving emails about the musical from Philip Griffin, please email him at pjgri1@eq.edu.au

Strings and Band
Southside Junior Strings Workshop (Coorparoo State School)

During Week 9 of this term, our Junior Strings players had the exciting opportunity to join students from 10 other schools across the district for an intensive two-day workshop, hosted by the Metropolitan South Region Music Resource Centre at Coorparoo State School.
From the moment they took their seats in the orchestra, our students were immersed in a rich learning experience — tackling new repertoire, refining their ensemble skills, and even participating in a combined choir. The workshop culminated in a final performance for parents and peers, showcasing everything they had achieved in just two days.

The students were proud and energised by the experience. Many shared with their Strings teacher, Rose Heratage, that while the days were challenging, the sense of accomplishment and joy in the final performance made it all worthwhile.
Important reminder: Instrument Care and Labelling
