STUDENT ABSENCES It is important that you contact the school before 9:30 am if your child is absent for any reason or will be late to school. This includes absences for a school event where the students make their own way to the event. Absence Line: 3900 9460 or Website: Our School > Absences or email admin: admin@camphillipss.eq.edu.au Please state your child's name, class, the date and the reason for the absence. |
As we move into the term there is much activity across our campus – our students are fully engaged in their learning programs and are enjoying making and renewing friendships. School terms can be very busy with numerous activities occurring across the 10 weeks. I know that our families, and staff, are appreciative of the P&C 2024 school calendar that captures key dates across the school year.
Thank you to all our families for attending the recent Parent/Teacher information sessions. The connections between home and school are pivotal to our students learning journey and one that we are committed to as a school.
Families have been sent an invitation to attend Term 1 Parent/Teacher conferences on Thursday 22 February. The meetings will be held in the school multipurpose hall from 3.30 – 8.30. Please ensure that you book your appointment online for this evening. Unfortunately, there is no babysitting provided on the evening.
On Saturday 10 February our P&C held their annual Welcome to Prep BBQ for all the 2024 Prep families. This year’s event was a resounding success with over 170 adults and 178 children, Prep teachers and Chappy Mal attending, even with the inclement weather. The feedback I have received has been exceptional, and I know that the opportunity to meet other families from the Prep classes has seen the beginning of many long and supportive friendships for our families over their time at Camp Hill. I would like to thank the P&C for their generosity and commitment to welcoming new families to our school community.
As we move into the school year there are several extracurricular activities offered for our students – including the Aerobics, Dance and Instrumental Music programs. Letters have been sent home to families which provide details of each program.
Additional programs this term include Life Education for all students (11 – 25 March); Mr Bourke’s Cross Country training and Gateways (Junior and Senior); Incursions including the Kaboom! Percussion program and Year 4 Moreton Bay excursion.
Special events include Grandparents and Special Friends Day (Friday 1 March) and Book Week, and of course the Easter Bonnet parades.
The annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is offered to all students in Years 3 and 5 and occurs from 13 – 25 March. Families of students in these year levels will receive additional information in the lead up to the tests. I encourage families to speak with your child’s class teacher if you have any queries related to the testing program. Mrs Nicole Vokes (Head of Department/Curriculum) can provide additional information on all areas of NAPLAN.
I am delighted with the ease that our students have settled into the school year. While we have had extreme, and challenging, weather from the first day of the year, the students have been flexible and resilient in adapting to changes in their meal breaks (staying in the air-conditioned classrooms on extremely hot days) and modified activities. I would also like to acknowledge the student’s engagement with their learning – our Camp Hill staff have frequently commented on this in all programs across campus.
Late last year our students participated in a Daily Mindfulness Meditation trial with Bond University. The program was conducted each day in Term 4 for all students Prep to Year 6. I have been advised that the preliminary data indicates statistically significance increase in students reported ‘happiness’ over the length of the program. The school will provide information to families on our future programming in this area of student wellbeing.
I encourage families to join our dynamic P&C and enjoy both new social connections within our community and support projects that enrich all our Camp Hill students learning. The next major fundraiser will be the Pick the Hit Bingo on Saturday 16 March.

Retirement
It is with very mixed feelings that I wish to announce my retirement from Education Qld with my last day being Friday 1 March. After 40 years in education, across two states, eight schools with 24 years as Deputy Principal, I have made the decision to move on to the next stage of my life.
I have been Deputy Principal at Camp Hill since 2007, based in the Junior school which has certainly been a career highlight, feeding my passion for Early Years Education and literacy. Over the years I have had the privilege of working with thousands of families and children, along with hundreds of amazing staff members – teachers, teacher aides, admin staff and the hard-working leadership team.
Camp Hill has certainly changed over the years with some exceptional programs, some amazing P&C teams, a highly sought after OSHC; as well as an engaging and strong community. Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School is a recognised high achieving school of choice that is looked upon favourably by our local high schools, private schools and families across Brisbane. It is wonderful to hear of the many ex Camp Hill students who have excelled in their secondary education and beyond. Our students and families can be extremely proud of their association with our school. I know that I am.
Camp Hill has been such an entrenched part of my life that I am sure I will continue to be involved in the school community in the future.
I wish to thank the school community for their support over the many years I have been at Camp Hill.
In terms of my replacement, the Education Department will let us know of the process in due course. In the meantime, Miss Kelsey King and Mrs Shelley Edwards have been filling in for me during my long service leave with the view of continuing this after I leave until a replacement is found.

Australian Curriculum Version 9.0
As outlined in the first Newsletter this term, Camp Hill will be implementing the new Version 9.0 Australian Curriculum in English this year.
The staged implementation of Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum across all 8 Learning Areas over 4 years is outlined below.
Some of the key changes in this updated curriculum for the teaching of English include:
- There are explicit references to the traditional and contemporary literature of First Nations Australians.
- In the early years, there is a strengthened focus on phonics, involving explicit and systematic phonics instruction of initial alphabetic code to read and write words, and beginning readers start with and practise using decodable texts.
- In the middle primary years, there is a strengthened focus on phonics and spelling, involving explicit instruction in both phonic and morphemic knowledge and skills to fluently read and spell multi-syllabic words with complex and less common spelling patterns.
- In the upper primary years, there is a strengthened focus on spelling, using phonic, morphemic and grammatical knowledge, word origins prefixes, suffixes and letter patterns to spell increasingly complex words.
- References to predictable texts, three-cueing and analytic phonics have been removed, and assessment that monitor these no longer align with the curriculum.
- There is an emphasis on shared reading of authentic texts to make meaning.
- There is an explicit focus on creating spoken and written texts using words, phrases and images.
- Engagement with, and shared reading of, authentic texts help to explicitly teach the underpinning components of language comprehension, including text structure, grammar, background knowledge and vocabulary.

CONFIDENCE
The Characters in the You Can Do It program guide children in the development of their social and emotional skills.
The 2024 school year began with the children meeting each character in puppet form and learning a little about each one.
The focus now is on CONFIDENCE.
Connie Confidence and Charlie Confidence are the characters who teach us skills to build up confidence with settling in to the start of the new school year.
Attention is centred on not being afraid to make mistakes when learning new things, making new friends and becoming used to new surroundings.
You Can Do It program developer, Professor Michael E Bernard explains that Confidence requires young people not to be overly concerned with what others think if they make a mistake. Confidence is revealed when young people are not afraid to fail and are happy to meet someone new. Confidence involves young people having trust in themselves and believing that they will probably be successful in the end. Confident young people stand up straight, look people in the eye and speak clearly with a firm tone of voice.
Having conversations with your child about what it means to be confident are highly valuable. If your child is preparing to participate in a new or difficult activity, say “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Have a go. Be positive. That will help you to be confident.”
When your child is getting ready to meet someone new, encounter a new situation or preparing to present something in class, say “Remember to stand up straight, look people in the eye and use a clear voice so people can clearly understand what you are saying.
Behaving with confidence will help children to do well in school and make friends.
- All our classes have been remembering their library bags and borrowing books with gusto! If you have a Spare Library Bag with barcode attached at home please return it asap.
- It has been lovely to see so many parents and children visiting the Junior Library before school to read and borrow extra books for reading at home.
- We have started the year with many celebrations including Chinese New Year, Safer Internet Day and Queensland School Library Week.
- Our new Year 6 Library Leaders are arranging their roster days to assist in both libraries at break times.
- Year 1 and 2 Bookworms have been visiting the Junior Library at first break.
- Years 3-6 have been enjoying using the Senior Library at second breaks, especially on hot days!
- Book Club Issue 1 orders should be delivered to classrooms in Week 5. This is our only Issue for this term as we have Book Fair coming up soon!!
- I have been busy writing reviews for books for the Premier’s Reading Challenge website, ready to commence in Term 2.
- We have a new Library staff member this year. Mr Scott Bromiley is with us on Wednesdays.
- Mrs Sam Worboys is continuing as our Library assistant four days a week.

Semester 1 Lytton District Sport Trials
Our school is one of many in the Lytton District school sport cluster. Students turning 10-12yrs old in 2024 (born 2012, 2013 and 2014) have the opportunity to nominate in Lytton district sport trials, which is the first stage of representative school sport. If successful, students then compete in the Met East regional trial. If students are selected in a Met East team, they play in the QLD state carnival.
Trials can be during or after school hours. Please note that these are not participation-based opportunities and children at these trials would need to have a high level of ability and/or experience to be involved. Schools are usually limited to 4 nominations for each district sport trial.
Below are the considerations when nominating:
- Is the correct age to trial (born 2012, 2013 or 2014)?
- Usually children turning 12yrs old, would get priority over younger students.
- Has prior playing experience and skills in interested sport?
- Their physical skill level and ability to trial in a representative opportunity.
- Safety suitability. Some children turning 12yrs old have developed physical size. Children under 12yrs old (born 2013 and 2014) would need to demonstrate the ability to compete with older children at a representative trial.

About Our Chaplain
Malcolm Brown is the chaplain at Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School. Chappy Mal works at Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
School Chaplains or “Chappies” provide social, emotional and practical support to students, staff and families within the school community. They provide support to help people navigate issues such as family breakdown, loneliness, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, self -worth and confidence building. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for those in crisis or those who may just need a friend. They also provide, with parental approval, spiritual support for students.
From the Chaplain
My name is Malcolm Brown, our students call me Chappy Mal and I have been the
chaplain since 2011. I have a Diploma in Youth work and have been involved in Youth and Children’s work for the past 30 years – working and volunteering in schools, running various school holiday programs as well as attending, leading and directing many SU Qld camps.
At Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School my focus is on building trust, being a positive role model, encouraging students to realize their potential and reinforcing positive attitudes with staff and students. It is a great privilege to journey alongside with people who are facing great challenges and heartache and to be able to provide practical help and a place to safely unload. I offer a diverse range of programs for our students and each program has a different focus and benefits for our students.
I am a member of the school support team that includes our Guidance Officer, Psychologist and specialist teachers. Referrals for individual programs of a spiritual nature always require parental approval. The Chaplaincy program is not aligned or associated with the Religious Education program.
How can you get Involved?
The chaplain is overseen and supported by a committee of school staff, school parents, local church members and volunteers that meet once a term to discuss fundraising, chaplaincy programs and events and ways to support the school community in general.
The Chaplaincy committee is entering a phase of transition where it is a perfect time to join our team and learn from the long-time members that are soon moving on so please contact us at camphillchaplaincy@hotmail.com

Reminder for all Volunteers

As everyone is settling into the new school year, Tuckshop is starting to get busier. This means more help is required especially on Thursday and Friday. So far only my wonderful helpers from the last few years have registered along with a couple of new parents. We are a school of 500+ families and only 10 have registered to help. Please get involved with our marvellous school community. It is very rewarding, and you won't regret it.
I can't stress enough how important it is, if your child has an allergy, to fill out the ALLERGY ALERT LABEL when ordering Flexischools

It is with an extremely heavy heart but the very best of wishes that we announce Angus is finishing up with us here at Camp Hill OSHC at the end of February. Angus will be taking his deep passion and enthusiasm for play and Playwork to new heights more formally with The Outsiders Play Advocates.
It is an understatement to say that he will be missed, but his tireless service and commitment over the last 15 years will last long after he leaves. His efforts have resulted in the OSHC we have today, both the tangible space and the passion, commitment, and knowledge of the team he was so dedicated to mentoring.
Lucy, Todd and Angus began this Playwork journey together as a team back in 2009 and eventually, with Isaih and Emma and the rest of the long-standing OSHC team, created an OSHC that is internationally recognised and revered in the sector. But, more importantly, they’ve created a second home within the Camp Hill community. It is with this sentiment that we reassure our families that the OSHC you know, and love will stay the same. Todd, Lucy, Emma and Isaih, as service managers, will continue to passionately advocate the philosophy of authentic play experiences and enthusiastically deliver the remarkable OSHC program they’ve co-developed over the years.
Angus is one of the most enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet so his decision to take his vocation and cultivate it comes naturally but not lightly- he is the first to admit he was never meant to spend 15 years in this job! Angus will stay connected to our service through friendships, partnerships and more formally in the training and support realm.
Angus’ official last day with us will be the 29 February. He will, in the meantime, try his hardest to say goodbye personally to everyone but falling short of this, we will be having an official “goodbye” afternoon on the 29 February. Please feel free to pop in to say your goodbyes!

The Crocs have hit the year with a splash! So many PB’s since the holidays and last weekend saw our Siblings Race on Friday night with the “Captains Carnival” on Saturday. An event based on novelty races and fun, all managed by the Club Captains and what a great job they did! The Mermaids and Mermen defeated the Pirates as they swum to glory!
Our next carnival on Saturday 2 March is the 3 way Carnival between Camp Hill, Cannon Hill and Norman Park. Registrations are now open.
The Crocs Committee would also like to advise that our Club Chair person, Regan Dent has stepped down from this role with regret. Tim Regan (formerly the Club Treasurer) has stepped into the role of Club Chair whilst Kara White has taken up the Club Treasurer position (formerly Vice Chair) for the remainder of this season. We, on behalf of all members, thank Regan for his dedicated service and passion for the Club. It has been a privilege to have worked together to benefit the entire school community.
We would like to thank our sponsors who have donated prizes so far this term including the Hon. Di Farmer MP, Rebel Sport, the Vassallo Family and Bunnings Cannon Hill. Should you wish to donate to any prizes to our weekly raffles please reach out to Paige our Raffles Convenor.
As always new and returning members are welcome to come and join in the fun. You can register here.
For Squads and Learn to Swim classes please contact Rollason’s Swim School at their website or reach out to Abbey on 0450 954 424.
