Principal’s Report
Term 1 has been a very busy time for all our students and staff: including students’ participation in a diverse range of exciting programs; celebrations of new knowledge and achievements across academic, sporting and The Arts programs as well as the building of new relationships for all our students. Home-School partnerships have been consolidated by Parent Teacher Conferences for every child and family involvement in numerous programs across campus – in particular the much-appreciated family volunteers at swimming lessons. Together We Achieve.
The two-week vacation will provide time for our community to refresh their energy and enjoy some opportunities not available during the busy school terms. I know a lot of families will be camping over the break and I wish you sunny weather!
A busy term
Next term commences on Monday 15 April. We have a very busy term that commences with school photos on 17 April for all classes; P&C Movie Night (20 April) and the annual Camp Hill ANZAC service (25 April) – all in the first two weeks of the new term.
Camp Hill ANZAC Service
The annual Camp Hill ANZAC service is one that is held in high regard by our community and one that reflects the value and respect for a key Australian tradition.
The history of the service goes back many years, when members of the (now disbanded) Belmont-Camp Hill RSL asked the school to take up the annual ANZAC service, on ANZAC day, for the Camp Hill community on their behalf. The school has done this with great pride for over 30 years. The annual program includes a march from the Camp Hill hotel (8am), up Old Cleveland Road (which is closed up to the school gate) and then a traditional ANZAC day service. Representatives from current and serving service personal are joined with representatives from a number of local schools (State, Private and Catholic), community groups and organisations and political representatives (Federal, State and Local). I have always been so proud of our students in the respectful manner in which they participate in the Service. It is touching to see our past students return to the Service in their secondary uniforms and others who have returned in uniform representing branches of the Defence force.
2025 Prep year
Next term we will have a number of information sessions for 2025 prep students and their families. It is essential that any family who is anticipating enrolling a child in the 2025 program submit an EOI as soon as possible. We have a large number of applications already this year for next year’s program.
P&C Executive
I would like to congratulate our 2024 P&C executive for taking up these very valued positions:
President: Maria O’Neill (continuing)
Vice President: Alexandra Whittington (continuing)
Vice President: Sara Watt
Vice President: Scott Miles
Vice President: Jaclyn Brown
Secretary: Claire Croker (continuing)
Treasurer: Kelby Willis (continuing)
On behalf of our school community, I would like to acknowledge the generosity of the executive and their commitment to our school and thank them for their support for every Camp Hill student.
At the March monthly meeting, immediately following the AGM, the P&C announced that they will be funding a new prep playground (part funded by their successful Gaming grant) and a new playground for the senior campus. These two new playgrounds will offer our students additional play activities as well as opportunities for teachers to use the equipment for targeted programming.
Term 1 started with extreme weather conditions that continued to challenge us. I know our staff and students are very appreciative of the air-conditioning that was mostly funded by our P&C over a number of years, prior to the Queensland government Cooler Schools program. The impact of a cooler learning environment is profound and one that truly does make a difference to all aspects of teaching and learning.
As we move into the holidays, I would like to wish everyone a safe, restful and rewarding holiday with friends and family and look forward to welcoming you back after the two-week break.
Take care
Deborah Driver
Best wishes

Deputy News
It has been a pleasure distributing positive behavior wristbands to students who have completed their behavior passports. As we conclude Term 1, we have been encouraging positive behavior, focusing on our 4 C’s: Commitment, Cooperation, Courtesy, and Consideration. Over the past few weeks, we've particularly emphasised the importance of keeping hands and feet to oneself.
Thanks to the P&C, we now have Green "container for change" bins on both campuses. We provided information to students during last week's Junior Parade to clarify what can and cannot be placed in these bins.
Please remember that before and after school, the playground equipment is off-limits to all students and siblings. Before school, supervision on the Junior School rubber matting and Senior school ashphalt begins at 8:30am, allowing students to play sensibly. While after-school playdates are wonderful, we kindly ask that you arrange them at a nearby park rather than on school grounds, as many Teachers are either in meetings or preparing for the next day.
CLASS PROTOCOLS
The school welcomes parents and family members to our school and values our home-school partnership. Parent volunteers are valued for their contributions in a number of school programs.
We ask that parents DO NOT go their child’s classroom during school hours due to the impact upon teaching and learning.
If a parent wishes to provide information/message to the class teacher during school hours, please contact the school administration staff or make an appointment to see a Deputy Principal (Junior, Senior campus or Inclusion).
If a parent wishes to visit their child’s classroom out of school hours, please let the office know so we can assist you.
We extend our best wishes for a safe and happy holiday to our staff, students, and parent community.

Updating Student Information
During the school year, there can be occasions when it is important that we make immediate contact with parents. We are unable to do this if our information is not current. Please help us to provide care and consideration for your child by updating your family records whenever a change occurs.
- If there is a change in your emergency contact phone number, email, or other emergency contact persons details.
- If you change your address.
- If any significant changes occur with regard to your child/children's health or medical details e.g. Health Plan or medication.
- If there are any changes regarding custody or access to your child/children.
- If you feel we should know of any other changes which relate to your child.
Prep - Year 2
The children have been engaging with Oscar Organisation and learning how to become more organised. This involves listening when required as well as being on time. This enhances the development of confidence in children and the positive feelings that go along with “I can do it!”
You Can Do It program developer, Professor Michael E Bernard explains that it is important to communicate behaviour-specific feedback immediately after children demonstrate confident behaviour: -
• “That took confidence.”
• “You were brave to do that all by yourself.”
• “Good for you. You were not afraid to try something new.”
• “You see, we all make mistakes when learning something new.”
• “You look and sound confident.”
• “You look happy being here.”
• “You showed confidence when you stood up in front of the class.”
The Year 2 classes have been exploring the importance individuals place on different things, as well as what we prioritise and value in life.
Through her book, “Herbert and Harry”, Pamela Allen delightfully captures the absurdity of some of our priorities.
We explored questions such as ‘What is it to live a good life?’, ‘What is it to be a brother?’, ‘What should we really value in our lives?’ and ‘What is mine?’
QSO excursion has MOVED!
Due to the clash of dates with the Beenleigh Dance Eisteddfod on August 2nd, we have rebooked the Queensland Symphony Orchestra excursion for a different concert (Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev) which will be taking place on October 18th.
More details will come later, but please correct your school calendars or however you keep track of upcoming events.
DATE CLAIMER - Year 4 Beginner Band Students - June 12th
There will be an all day Beginner Band Workshop at Holland Park SHS where Camp Hill students join with beginning band students from other local schools on Wednesday, 12th June.
Paperwork will be sent home at the start of Term 2.
Payment and registration deadline will be late May.
USING PROCEEDS OF MATILDA
If you ever wondered what happens to any profits from ticket sales in relation to our school musical productions...
After the costs of buying the scripts and paying "the rights", purchasing costumes and whatever else is required, if there's any money left over, it goes into worthy arts-related projects within the school.
This year, the "School Musical" finances have bank-rolled the refurbishment of the school's Bass Clarinet, and the purchasing of several instruments including a brand-new drum-kit, four trumpets, and an alto saxophone to the tune (no pun intended) of more than $3,000.
Just imagine, the students benefitting from these wonderful purchases might finish up one day playing in a professional orchestra accompanying a musical.
Whatever the long-term repercussions, it's great to be able to contribute to the school's music program.
Listen out for the Bass Clarinet with the new lease on life featuring in a concert near you soon!
Wishing all Camp Hill musicians a great holiday break and we look forward to launching into another term of musical adventures with you after the holidays.
Choristers, remember that ANZAC Day is in Week 2 of Term 2, so keep those ANZAC Day songs going around in your head. Once we're back, we'll only have one rehearsal before ANZAC Day itself.
Library Matters
Catch the Reading Bug Book Fair !!
A very big THANKYOU to all our students, parents, teachers and grandparents who supported our Book Fair. Camp Hill is certainly a reading school with fantastic sales at Book Fair.
A special thankyou to the 15 families who donated a book to our Library. These donations have been processed and delivered to students for the first read, complete with a donation bookplate to recognise this kind donation.
Our school benefits with credits of an amazing $3,500 from Scholastic to be used across the next twelve months, for both classroom and library resources. Our Library collection is so much richer for this boost to our funding.
Readers’ Cup
Year 5 and 6 students have been busy reading to try out for the 2024 CBCA Readers’ Cup team.
The five team members chosen will need to independently read 5 chapter books and study them during Term 2 ready for district competitions. Our team will be announced next term.
Digital Technology
All grades have commenced their Digital Technology units for the year. In Term 2 some year levels will be borrowing books with their teacher at a different time, to enable all Library time for Technology work. This will continue until projects and assessments are completed. Your class teacher will advise you of new borrowing days after the holidays.
Being familiar with software is critical for students being able to apply it effectively for a purpose. Ideally students would have access to these programs on a home device. The holidays may be a great time to download these software applications.
Year 1 students are creating and representing data in an iPad app called Book Creator.
Year 2 students are programming Bee Bots and using the Bee Bot app on the iPads. They will also commence work in Scratch 3.0 ready for Year 3.
Year 3 and 5 students will be working extensively with Scratch 3.0 (offline version) to code a variety of interactive games and quizzes.
Year 4 and 6 students are manipulating data in Microsoft Excel.
Both Scratch 3.0 and Excel are available free for education use, allowing students to use them at home.
To download a free home copy of Microsoft Office 365, including Excel, go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/education/students. Student’s email address will need to be added to establish link with Education Queensland.
Scratch 3.0 (offline) is available for free download from Massachussets Institute of Technology at https://scratch.mit.edu/download
Book Creator and the Bee Bot app are available on iTunes or Google Play.
Happy holidays!

Semester 1 Lytton District Sport Trials
Our school is 1 of 29 schools in the Lytton District school sport cluster. Students turning 10-12yrs old in 2024 (Born 2012, 2013 and 2014) have the opportunity to nominate in Lytton district sport trials, which is the first stage of representative school sport. If successful, students then compete in the Met East regional trial. If students are selected in a Met East team, they play in the QLD state carnival.
Trials can be during or after school hours. Please note that these are not participation-based opportunities and children at these trials would need to have a high level of ability and/or experience to be involved. Schools are usually limited to 4 nominations for each district sport trial.
Below are the considerations when nominating:
- Is the correct age to trial (Born 2012, 2013 or 2014).
- Usually children turning 12yrs old, would get priority over younger students.
- Has prior playing experience and skills in the interested sport.
- Their physical skill level and ability to trial in a representative opportunity.
- Safety suitability. Some children turning 12yrs old have developed physical size. Children under 12yrs old (Born 2013 and 2014) would need to demonstrate the ability to compete with older children at a representative trial.
Semester 1 sport trials on offer are:
Sport | Trial date | Nominations close |
* Girl’s and Boy’s Cross Country | Tuesday 30 April | * Tuesday 26 March |
Boy’s Rugby Union | Wednesday 8 May | Wednesday 1 May |
Girl’s and Boy’s Soccer | Tuesday 14 May | Tuesday 7 May |
Girl’s and Boy’s Softball | Tuesday 28 May | Tuesday 21 May |
* Squash is a Met East trial. Children that qualify, automatically are in the Lytton district team.
* Cross Country nominations are dependent on our school carnival results.
Please see Mr Bourke ASAP before the trial date, for more information or to be nominated.

Business Manager
This year Step Up have four teachers working together to develop and implement the many components of the Step Up program for Literacy and Numeracy. Kelsey King, Susan Jermanus, Diane Gorrie and Vanessa Low Crompton are all working, together with the teacher aides, to improve learning outcomes for all children from Prep through to Year 6.
This term, the Step Up team have assisted classroom teachers to implement DIBELS testing throughout the school. This testing has been introduced to all classes from P-6 this year, following a trial for P-3 in 2023.
DIBELS are measures that help teachers and schools determine how students are performing on important reading skills. DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills.
These critical skills necessary for successful beginning reading include: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The DIBELS measures assess students on up to five critical skills, depending on year level, which are often referred to as the “Big Ideas” of reading. This school-wide testing will occur 3 times during the year so that progress is closely monitored.
As well as running our differentiated Literacy and Numeracy programs throughout the school to support all students, our Step Up team have also been busily preparing our Reading Room which houses the Decodable Readers that the school has purchased over the past few years. When the cataloguing of all of these wonderful books is finished, children will be able to borrow from our Decodable Library as well as our Junior/Senior Library.

Term 2 sees the start of the Winter Warmer Menu. For Term 2 and 3 the specials are Fish Tacos, Fried Rice, Waffles and everybody's favourite.... Butter Chicken. Around EKKA time I will have Dagwood Dogs on the menu for a couple of weeks.
Due to the ever-increasing price rises from suppliers, we have found ourselves in the position of having to raise prices in the Tuckshop. This will take effect from the start of Term 2.

Uniform Shop
Winter Uniforms
As the term finishes, families begin to think about winter or warmer items to add the school uniform.
The school uniform includes a jacket and track pants and a polar fleece vest all with the Camp Hill branding.
However, any item (other track pants/jackets/long sleeve tshirt/leggings etc) can be worn with the school uniform but MUST be navy blue in color only.
These can be sourced from other retailers.
Winter stock from the uniform shop is available in new or second hand.
Second hand stock is very popular so please bring to the uniform shop any jackets/pants/vests that your family has outgrown for resale for store credit.
Items must be in good condition.
If you have not sold through the uniform shop before, please ask and I can explain how the system helps all Camp Hill families.
New stock of jackets/pants is currently under production and will be in stock in early May.
Vests are available in both new and second hand now.
As always, if you have any questions, please let me know via email and will help as best I can.

The team at Camp Hill OSHC were lucky enough to represent Camp Hill OSHC at the National Play and Playwork Conference in Melbourne. Our topic delved into the story of Camp Hill from its origins with Playwork in 2014.
The conference was a 3-day event, with more than 32 national and international speakers and breakout sessions. We received some incredible feedback from the event, with delegates showing significant interest in our service.
From our play work pedagogical approach, this conference is this pinacol of our sector and we are so blessed to be able to not only attend but to be a very key part of it. We are hoping to share all the wonderful information we digested over the weekend at our next staff meeting.
Congratulations to the following Crocs Members - Club Captain Curtis P who not only broke the Clubs 17 years male 200m Individual Medley Record last weekend but he has also qualified for Nationals in 50m Breaststroke and to Emilie W who represented Met East this week at the Queensland State School Sport Swimming Trials for the 200m Individual Medley ⭐️
It’s a Season wrap for the Crocs this week! It’s been a season full of personal best times, new pool records, sibling (tiny tot) races, and lots of fun. Thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors over the season.
Our AGM and Committee Meeting will be held at 630pm on Thursday 2 May at the Camp Hill Bowls Club. Everyone is welcome, as we have many committee members stepping down.
Looking forward to seeing returning and new members in Term 4 when we commence the next season.

eSafety
Camp Hill is committed to helping students develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes to be safe and respectful users of technology. We are also aware that students’ online experiences often move seamlessly between home and school and as a school are committed to supporting our students safety online. We will be sharing a range of information, tips and resources for parents and carers from the eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) that you can use with your family to help create positive experiences for your children online.
Reporting when something goes wrong online
If your child experiences something harmful online such as cyberbullying, image-based abuse or illegal and restricted content, you can report it directly to the social media service, game, app or website where the incident occurred.
Often young people will need the support of an adult to report. The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) advises taking the following steps:
1. Collect evidence before reporting to the platform or taking other action. If the issue is ongoing, make sure you collect screenshots showing what has been happening and for how long.
2. Report to the platform where it happened. Use The eSafety Guide to help you. After you report, the service may remove the content straight away. They may also block those responsible or delete their account. If the post involves something illegal like grooming, they may refer it to law enforcement or another agency to take further action.
3. If the platform does not take action, you or your child can report it to eSafety. eSafety will ask you to complete an online reporting form and include evidence.
Online safety for every family
The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) has released resources to help parents and carers from all backgrounds protect their families online.
The Online Safety for Every Family resources cover how to:
• get started with social media
• enjoy safer online gaming
• help your child if they are bullied online.
And to make sure more families can start a conversation with their children about online safety, the resources are available in English, Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Burmese, Dari, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhalese, Swahili, Tamil, Tigrinya, Uyghur and Vietnamese.
Our school will soon be providing parents with access to a new, convenient, online parent portal called QParents. The QParents web and mobile application provides an easier way for you to interact with our school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer. QParents allows parents to connect instantly with our school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:
• Attendance and absence details
• Academic report cards
• Viewing and paying invoices
• Viewing and updating personal student details
• Providing consent for excursions and incursions
A staggered roll-out of QParents will commence in Term 2.
