Principal’s Report
As we move through the term I find it is timely to mention items related to student safety.
Camp Hill has a well-established Stop Drop Go zone (previously known as the 2 Minute zone) on Ferguson Road immediately outside the multipurpose hall.
The zone is supported by school staff each afternoon until 3.30pm.
Some things to consider when using the Stop Drop Go zone:
• There is a strictly NO PARKING rule for the entire length of the zone
• Students will be called out to move to their family car by the supervising staff member
• Students are to move immediately to their car
• Students are NOT to move onto the road to access their car from the road side of the vehicle
• Students will be supervised until 3.30pm, after which they will be taken to the senior campus office and families contacted by a staff member.
Some of the more ‘amazing’ things that ARE NOT supporting student safety:
1. Parents pulling up beside cars line-up in the zone (i.e. blocking the throughfare of Ferguson Road traffic) and calling their child to move through the line-up of zone cars to get into the family car
2. Parents parking in the zone line-up until they see their child – please go around the block if your child is not ready. Your child will be supervised. Cars in the line-up have had to move around parked cars to ensure that the zone is moving!
3. Family members driving down Ferguson Road and moving to the front of the line-up (in the lined-off no parking zone immediately on the pedestrian crossing) and calling their children to the car – this one is always an amazing sight!
4. Parents moving up Ferguson Road and doing a U-turn immediately past the pedestrian crossing to collect their child/ren
5. Parking in the bus zone immediately outside the junior campus library entry to the school. We do have students who catch after school buses from this stop.
6. Families directing students to access the car from the traffic side – often swinging open the car door to enable the child to enter the car with bags etc. I seen cars serve onto the coming traffic to avoid this situation.
In reality, the zone rules are very basic and require drivers to look to the safety of our students. Your support for the safety of ALL Camp Hill students is greatly appreciated.
School evening Disco
I would like to thank everyone for supporting our recent evening Disco. These evenings rely on the support of many people and this disco was no exception, on behalf of the students I would like to thank you all for your support.
I was delighted to see our Tawny Frogmouth Owl has remained in its nest immediately outside the Hall – a treat for the children to see on the night.
School Emergency Procedure
Throughout the year the school conducts both Lock Down and Evacuation drills. This is a requirement of the department and ensures that every student is confident and comfortable with the requirements should a situation occur when we do need to either lockdown or evacuate. I have been very impressed with the students ease of following the procedures each time we have held a drill. Drills in first semester are announced prior to the actual drill, but later in the year we schedule unannounced drills at various times of the school day.
Prep 2025
Thank you to all families who are anticipating enrolling a younger sibling in the 2025 prep class for submitting your Expression of Interest in a timely manner. We are currently offering both Information Sessions and first round of offers (families in-catchment and siblings). Out of catchment offers occur from the second round and continue throughout the remainder of the year.
If a family’s circumstance does change (transferring out of area, child repeating pre-prep) and you will not be not taking up an offer, please advise the office as soon as possible so that we can offer your place to someone on the EOI Waitlist.
Our Enrolment Officer, Julie, will be able to assist with any queries related to enrolments.
New Playgrounds
I would like to thank our P&C for the tremendous effort that is going into the two new playgrounds (one on each campus). The fund raising has occurred over many years, and to see the plans become a reality will be a total joy. I know that EVERY Camp Hill student will have the opportunity of exploring the new playgrounds and enjoying the challenges of the equipment.
Mother’s Day stall
A special thank you to Mrs Rook for organising yet another very successful Mother’s Day stall for our community. I am sure that hundreds of our mothers, and special people, enjoyed their treats over the Mother’s Day weekend.
Cross Country events
Thank you to Mr Bourke (PE teacher), Mr Terry (Schools Officer) and all the people involved with the recent Junior and Senior Cross mornings. These events are a wonderful time for families and students to celebrate each student’s participation in their year level event. I am always amazed at how confident the prep students are during their event! Camp Hill is so fortunate to have such wonderful grounds for all our sporting activities.
Cooler weather
As we move into the cooler months of the year our students will need an extra layer of clothing to accommodate the weather. Please ensure that all your child’s clothing is named so that we can return any ‘lost/misplaced’ items to you. The lost property containers on each campus continue to be full of expensive school clothing.
Parent concerns
It is important that families contact the school (class teacher or member of the school leadership team) if you have concerns regarding another child on campus. Please do not approach the parent/s of the other child.
Best wishes

School Assemblies
School assemblies give us the opportunity to talk with students about school life and issues that may be impacting our day-to-day life at school. It is also a time that we can share learning and celebrate with others. Parent and carers of students at our school are always welcome to attend school assemblies.
School assemblies occur weekly on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30pm for approximately 15-30min. Generally, whole school assemblies are held in Week 1 and 10 of each term, senior assemblies are in even weeks (i.e: Week 2, 4, 6 and 8) and junior assemblies are in odd weeks (i.e. 3, 5, 7 and 9). The assemblies for the remainder of Term 2 are:
• Week 7, Wednesday 29 May at 2:30 – Junior (Prep – Year 2) Assembly
• Week 8, Wednesday 5 June at 2:30 – Senior (Year 3-6) Assembly
• Week 9, Wednesday 12 June at 2:30 – No Parade due to Senior Athletics Day 1
• Week 10, Wednesday 19 at 2:30 – Whole School (Prep – Year 6) Assembly
We look forward to seeing you there.
Fun Day
It was wonderful to see and meet so many parents and carers at our Prep-Year 2 Fun Day; thank you. Many students and staff were very excited to see out special guest storyteller, Mr Frearson. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Frearson for given up his time and spending the morning with us. We would also like to thank our staff for organising the activities and supporting our students and families on the day. A big thank Mrs Thorpe for the extra hours she has given to coordinate this very special event, including organising the police and fire department to visit. It was a pleasure to see some past students who organised the Science events with the other students and staff from Whites Hill College, thank you. To our students, thank you for showing us your smiling faces and letting us hear your laughter – seeing you have heaps of fun, made our day!
Timely Reminder: Keep Details Up-to-Date
Please remember to let the school know if you have changed you contact details (e.g. phone number, email addresses) or emergency contacts. With the recent increase in students becoming sick at school, we have found that some of the contact details are now incorrect.

Curriculum News
With the theme ‘Now more than ever’ for National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2024, it is a time to reflect and continue building momentum towards reconciliation in our schools and broader communities. This theme invites all Australians to learn more about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and explore how everyone can contribute to promoting reconciliation in our everyday lives - in our homes, schools, and social circles.
Reconciliation Australia develops a different theme for NRW each year. National Sorry Day is on 26 May, the day before NRW. The week then starts and ends with two important dates:
• 27 May – in 1967, 90% of Australians voted ‘yes’ in a referendum, giving the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and count them in the census.
• 3 June – in 1992, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s special relationship with the land. This paved the way for land rights and Native Title.
While National Reconciliation Week is a great time to teach about reconciliation, the themes of reconciliation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures and Histories are very much embedded in all our teaching and learning programs at Camp Hill. This is more evident as we move to Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum.
Through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority, the Australian Curriculum:
…provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with the ability to see themselves, their identities and cultures reflected in the curriculum; and allows all students to engage in reconciliation, respect and recognition of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. Council of Australian Governments, Education Council (2019) Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration, p 15.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority provides opportunities for all students to deepen their knowledge of Australia by learning about the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. Through the Australian Curriculum, students learn that contemporary First Nations Australian communities are strong, resilient, rich and diverse.

eSafety
Camp Hill is committed to helping students develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes to be safe and respectful users of technology. We are also aware that students’ online experiences often move seamlessly between home and school and as a school are committed to supporting our students safety online. We will be sharing a range of information, tips and resources for parents and carers from the eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) that you can use with your family to help create positive experiences for your children online.
Reporting when something goes wrong online
If your child experiences something harmful online such as cyberbullying, image-based abuse or illegal and restricted content, you can report it directly to the social media service, game, app or website where the incident occurred.
Often young people will need the support of an adult to report. The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) advises taking the following steps:
1. Collect evidence before reporting to the platform or taking other action. If the issue is ongoing, make sure you collect screenshots showing what has been happening and for how long.
2. Report to the platform where it happened. Use The eSafety Guide to help you. After you report, the service may remove the content straight away. They may also block those responsible or delete their account. If the post involves something illegal like grooming, they may refer it to law enforcement or another agency to take further action.
3. If the platform does not take action, you or your child can report it to eSafety. eSafety will ask you to complete an online reporting form and include evidence.
Online safety for every family
The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) has released resources to help parents and carers from all backgrounds protect their families online.
The Online Safety for Every Family resources cover how to:
• get started with social media
• enjoy safer online gaming
• help your child if they are bullied online.
To make sure more families can start a conversation with their children about online safety, the resources are available in English, Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Burmese, Dari, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhalese, Swahili, Tamil, Tigrinya, Uyghur and Vietnamese.

Uniform Shop
Winter Uniforms
Did you know??
The official school uniform includes a jacket and track pants and a polar fleece vest all with the Camp Hill branding.
These items can be worn over summer uniform items by all students in all year levels if they choose.
However, any item (other track pants/jackets/long sleeve t shirt/leggings etc) can be worn with the school uniform but MUST be navy blue in colour only.
Remember too.....
These can be sourced from other retailers.
If your student is part of the school representative teams in Dance or Cheer or Aerobics they MUST have the official school jacket and pants to wear on competition days.
Winter stock from the uniform shop is available in new or second hand (limited range.
Second hand stock is very popular so please bring to the uniform shop any jackets/pants/vests that your family has outgrown for resale to help everyone find items they are looking for and earn back some $$ too !! (A good quality second hand jacket sells for $45 - P and C just ask $5 to cover handling and the rest is yours back - great system)
Items must be in good condition.
If you have not sold through the uniform shop before, please ask and I can explain how the system helps all Camp Hill families.

We have welcomed 3 new staff in the past month, all coming to OSHC with a varied background. Julie has only recently moved to Brisbane, coming all the way from Chicago IL where she has worked professionally as a teaching artist, theatre for young audience’s administrator, care worker, and early childhood educator over the last 20 years. Grace is currently pursuing an Undergraduate Certificate in STEM foundations, which is a stepping stone towards her goal of obtaining a Bachelor of Primary Education. Grace is also a keen AFL player and has worked as an Auskick facilitator for many years in Cairns. April graduated from Camp Hill SS in 2014 and is so excited to join the team. We still have her handprint on the entrance wall to OSHC that was put there over 10 years ago! April’s mum was also the OSHC Sub Committee Chairperson for many years, so there is much history there. April is currently studying Criminology and Criminal Justice. If you haven’t already, please feel free to say hey and make staff feel welcome.
An important aspect of being an Educator/Playworker at Camp OSHC, is being able to establish a deeper understanding of children’s play and development. One such method is through constant critical reflection. We try and capture this is in a unique way. Staff are asked to complete weekly tasks every week. These tasks are designed to promote deeper thinking about the theoretical ideas that underpin childhood development and play. A recent weekly task, as an example, was for staff to bring in a loose part that they have found, and document this by taking a photo of it for other staff to view. The second part, and the intriguing aspect of the task, is for staff to then view and document the use of these items within the play space. This is where things become interesting! It allows for staff to observe the many ways in which a child will use these objects. Uses that are often well beyond our expectations or imaginations! This highlights the child’s ability to think divergently. The theory that if afforded the time and space, children will be able to quickly and spontaneously produce many ideas and uses for an item. Sir Ken Robinson, an inspirational figure within the Camp Hill service, discusses this, highlighting that studies show children are actually considered geniuses when it comes to divergent thinking, if they are given the time and space to do so. Camp Hill OSHC’s 2017 action research into the benefits of loose parts play exemplified this very concept. The results of what the staff have gathered thus far on what the children have used for these new Loose Parts highlights these exact benefits.
Thanks from your team at OSHC
Drumbeat
The Year 5 students have been practising their new rhythms and learning more about listening to one another in order to make a great sounding, consistent beat.
Emergency Food Hamper
Sometimes students forget their lunch or for whatever reason don’t have food at school. Please consider buying an extra item or two at your weekly shop and deliver to Chappy Mal’s office on the Senior Campus.
Muesli bars, fruit cups, cheese and crackers, Up and Go etc, anything that has a longer shelf life would be greatly appreciated.
Chaplaincy Free Dress Day – Wednesday 29th

How many colours can you fit on your clothes? Can you wear all one colour? Or even your team’s colours?
Spellathon 2024 – Postponed to Term 3
We will be holding the Spellathon in Term 3 with brand new prizes and an online platform that will be much more user friendly.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with our school to access and manage their child’s "student information", including:
• Attendance and absence details
• Academic report cards
• Viewing and paying invoices
• Viewing and updating personal student details
• Providing consent for excursions and incursions
A staggered roll-out of QParents will commence in Term 2, as follows:
- Year 4 families Friday 10 May (week 4)
- Year 2 families Friday 17 May (Week 5)
- Prep, Year 1, 3, 5, 6 Term 3 and 4
Parents and Carers will receive two emails. One email will contain an invitation to register and the second email will contain your child’s Education Queensland Identification Number, which will be required during the registration process. Further details will be included in the emails.
Updating Student Information
During the school year, there can be occasions when it is important that we make immediate contact with parents. We are unable to do this if our information is not current. Please help us to provide care and consideration for your child by updating your family records whenever a change occurs.
- If there is a change in your emergency contact phone number, email, or other emergency contact persons details.
- If you change your address.
- If any significant changes occur with regard to your child/children's health or medical details e.g. Health Plan or medication.
