Principal’s Report
Mrs Driver sends her thanks.
Mrs Driver has appreciated the many kind messages of support and would like to thank the wonderful Camp Hill community for their well wishes as she continues her recovery. She is making progress in her recovery and hopes to be back at our school before the end of term. In the meantime, she is enjoying reading the many messages and letters sent to her by our students and was delighted to see the video created by our school captains. I believe Mrs Driver has even started colouring-in the “Colouring In book” made by a lower school class.
While Mrs Driver continues her leave of absence Mrs Jane Tuckett will continue as Acting Principal and Mrs Genevieve Clark will continue as Acting Deputy Principal.
Congratulations Year 5s
We had the pleasure of attending the Year 5 Science Fair today. It was amazing the knowledge our students demonstrated when explaining and sharing their science experiments with other year levels. The smiles that we saw on the students in the audience along with the interesting questions that asked showed the support our students give each other. We would like to thank Mrs Keene and the other Year 5 teachers for giving the students the opportunity to explore and learn more about science. Thanks also to our Year 5 students for their effort and sharing their love/enjoyment for Science; it looked like you had heaps of fun experimenting!
2025 Parent Requests
We will shortly be starting our planning for 2025. On Monday 19 August, 2024 all families will be emailed a letter outlining how parents/carers can have input into their child/ren’s class placement. With the letter will be a 2025 Consideration for placement form for parents/carers to complete if they would like to provide additional information for staff to consider when making classes for 2025. It is optional to complete and return this form.
This year we have created a special email address, 2025Requests@camphillipss.eq.edu.au for the forms to be email back to, thus ensuring requests sent to the appropriate person and considered. Please note while we encourage you to talk with your child’s class teachers it is important that you complete the 2025 Consideration for placement form and email it to the address above, as only these will be considered. When completing the form, please remember that we are unable to consider requests for specific teachers.
Students leaving in 2025
If your child will be in Year 1-5 in 2025 but will not be returning to Camp Hill, please let the Junior Campus know. If your child is leaving us for high school, please let their class teacher know which high school they will be attending.
Prep 2025
If you child was born between 1 July 2019 and 31 June 2020, they can attend Prep 2025. Please enrol your child now as classes are filling fast.
What a busy week it has been on the Junior Campus! We started the week wet as ducks which is always "fun" in a school environment! Our Preps got to experience the Timbarra production and judging from the looks on their faces, they had a fun time engaging with the puppets.
Now that the Olympics is over (is everyone as lost as I am?) we can focus on other things. One thing that I would like to take this opportunity to remind our students about is the"High 5" we encourage them to use to resolve conflict with each other. This has been covered in the classrooms and is reiterated on the playground. Often we find they are very practised at some of the steps, but will sometimes forget the last one. REPORT. The students can "talk friendly", "ignore", "walk away" and "talk firmly" but often do not practise the last step - to report the incident or behaviour to an adult. I would encourage you discuss these steps with your child, particularly how important it is to let an adult know what has happened. When we know what has happened, then we can deal with it.
As part of the National Bullying - No Way week (Everyone Belongs) teachers have shared resources in the classrooms with their students. Please feel free to look at these resources and discuss them with your child.

There continues to be illness in the school, therefore we encourage any students who are not well to stay at home until they are better. There is nothing more miserable than coming to school when you're not feeling well. Please help us keep the school as healthy as we possibly can. The good news is that Spring is just around the corner!
Can I also encourage parents to use the pedestrian paths as a means of entering and exiting the school. A number of families have taken to walking down the driveway and I would like to remind you all that cars do come and go during these times as well. Staff have mentioned that, on occasion, when leaving the schoolgrounds, they have had to wait for parents and students on the driveway.

Thank you to those families who completed the School Opinion Survey. The surveys will help the school to identify what we are doing well, and understand where we can improve. Our families, some students and staff are invited each year to complete the survey and we value the different viewpoints this provides.

The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 is Species Survival - More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
This year our school was involved in National Science Week Activities in a number of ways. On Tuesday, a small group of our science savvy Year five students attended a Science week half day excursion at Cavendish Road School. This opportunity saw the students involved in some ‘labs unlocked’ STEM sessions run by senior teachers, year 12 Senior STEM leaders and year 10 Stem Girl power representatives.
At our school, all students took some Brain Break mini science activities in their classrooms across the week and had the opportunity to check out the “Science at CHSIPS” display in both libraries. Finally, classes got the opportunity to visit the Year 5 “Science Fair” held in the hall on Friday 16 August. Report and photos to come!
The National Science week website is also a wonderful resource for getting your child involved in the celebrations around our area. There are an amazing variety of topics to investigate including: disease-causing organisms, life-saving chemicals, clean water, photosynthesis, genetic screening, physics of building structures, artificial intelligence, and microplastics. For more information check out the website @ https://www.scienceweek.net.au/#
Finally, the Queensland Science Contest is an opportunity for Queensland students from Prep to Grade 12 to have their scientific work judged for awards and prizes. To enter, students must see Mrs Keene by the end of August 2024. Before entering, Parents and students should read the Handbook & other information pages https://www.staq.qld.edu.au/competitions/queensland-science-contest/handbook/ and then choose a contest category. Projects are completed at home. Mrs Keene will submit online entries before Thursday 3rd October 2024. Please note there is a $5 per individual entry fee or $10 per group entry (maximum of 3 students per group).

PREP and YEAR 2.
PERSISTENCE
Having conversations with children about what it means to be persistent is important, as it enables them to consolidate their growing understanding. For example, when you hear your child saying, “This is boring. I hate this!" think about replying with: “We all have different things to do that are boring. I have learnt that it is best to keep going and get it finished. This is called persistence.”
The Prep children listed things with which they are persisting:
Writing letters.
Some games that I play.
Doing hard puzzles.
Making my bed.
Playing soccer.
Getting across the monkey bars.
There are times when we cannot do something ‘yet’. The children are realising the importance of not giving up when they are not able to master something straight away. Janelle Monae reinforces this message when she sings “The Power of Yet”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLeUvZvuvAs
The second verse of the song,” I’ll Be Persistent” which the children are learning, has some sound messages ……...
I’LL GET THERE IN THE END, IS WHAT I TELL MYSELF.
THERE’S REALLY NOTHING TO IT, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS DO IT
PERSISTENCE IS MY FRIEND; I WON’T PUT IT OFF AGAIN.
BECAUSE, PERSISTENCE, THAT IS WHAT HAS HELPED TODAY.
Maths and Number skills are everywhere and an essential part of life. Have you noticed how often you use basic maths skills in your everyday life?
• Cooking – measuring, fractions ( ½ cup, ½ sandwich)

Queensland Symphony Orchestra
Children who are members of the extracurricular music program have been given the opportunity to attend a performance of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Information was sent to families and registration and payment must be made before a place can be assured.
Instrumental Music Program
Last week, families of children in Year Two and Year Three received an Expression of Interest letter from the school. This letter is the first step in applying for entrance into the Instrumental Music Program for 2025. This is for children currently in Year 2 who would like to play a string instrument or a child in Year 3 who would like to play a band instrument in 2025. These forms need to be returned to the school by the end of day on Friday 16 August. More information about the program will sent out in the coming weeks.
Recorder Band
The children who are part of the recorder band need to remember to bring their recorders and music folders to rehearsal in the Senior Music Room during second break on Mondays. There are some children who are regular attendees and some who are occasional visitors. Regular attendance and regular practice is essential for improvement as we prepare for our end of year music evening.
Celebration of Music
Each year our wonderful Camp Hill musicians celebrate their learning by performing for their families and friends at our Celebration of Music evening. In previous years this has taken place in September, however this year our Celebration of Music evening is on Wednesday, 6th November. This evening will take place in our school hall and all children who are members of a choir or instrumental group, such as strings, band, guitar, ukulele and recorder, will be performing.
Reading is Magic!
Who doesn’t have a favourite storybook character? A childhood memory of a favourite book, or a magical moment that can never be erased? Reading can take you to some magical places – anything can happen in a book!
From Mrs Pepperpot shrinking at unexpected moments, Peter Pan tapping at the window, Blinky Bill getting up to mischief, to mystical places entered through wardrobes….these images stay with us for decades to come. Why wouldn’t you fill your childhood with magic? (I just reflected that many of my early stories were English, not Australian. We are fortunate that now our children can enjoy Australian texts written by local authors. How far has the Australian children’s book industry come in 50 years!)
Book Week 17th -23rd August
Our annual Book Week character parade for Years P-2 will be held on Wednesday 21st August. The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) theme for this year is “Reading is Magic”.
Book Parade Times - Wednesday 21st August
Prep classes – 9:00am- 10:00am
Year 1 classes – 10:00am- 11:00am
Year 2 classes – 2:00- 3:00pm
Parents are welcome to join us in the Multi-purpose hall on Ferguson Rd to view the parades at the above times. Remember social distancing protocols, and please stay home if you are unwell.
All students will parade with their class, then individually walk across our small stage and down the catwalk. Ideally students will know the name of their character and the title of the book. If you have the copy of the book, or can borrow it from the library, it is a great prompt to carry it with them. If you cannot locate a copy of the book, a printed copy of the front cover is allowed for educational purposes. Making a lanyard of book cover to hang around their neck is also helpful when hands are full!
Please feel free to take a photograph of your child in their Book Week costume, but remember to not take or share photos of other students, especially on social media.
Book Week News
CBCA Judges’ announcements take place on the Friday before Book Week. You will have to wait till the Book Parade to find out the winning titles for this year. My favourites are Timeless and Bowerbird Blues (Picture Books), The Concrete Garden and One Little Duck ( Early Childhood), Hope is the Thing (New Illustrator), Scar Town (Younger Reader – Senior Fiction) , Country Town ( Eve Pownall – Information text). Our younger readers have been enjoying many of the Shortlisted titles in Library this term. Most are in our school library and will be available for borrowing after Book Week.
Australian School Library Day - August 21
This year’s slogan is “School Libraries Build Brighter Futures”.
Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School is very fortunate to have our two school library collections. All students and teachers have access to an extensive collection of resources for learning, teaching and recreational reading. We also have a full time qualified Teacher Librarian and a teacher aide to assist parents and teachers in the selection of appropriate reading materials for all students P-6. Our Junior Library is open before school every morning 8:30am- 9:00am for parents and students to borrow and read. We are building brighter futures!
Storybox Hub
Our favourite online story collection Storybox Library has this year changed names. It is now called Storybox Hub. You may need to change your bookmarks to
https://auth.storyboxhub.com/login
Our school pays an annual subscription which also allows parents and students home access. It is a password protected site so please do not share with anyone outside our school community. Public access for others is available via the Brisbane City Council Library service.
Our school logon is : chips pw: storybox
Many of the 2024 shortlisted books, and over 500 other Australian stories, are available online through Storybox.
Prep Blue has held its very first Potato Olympics. Students have been so excited watching the Olympics and discussing the medal tally that they have created their own athletes out of potatoes, made a flag and become part of Team Blue, White, Green, Yellow or Red. They even have their own Medal Tally on the wall!
The students have participated in
- Tator Twirl - how long can you spin a potato?
- Tator Balance - where potatoes balance for as long as possible between blocks and pencils
- Spud Skate - how far can a potato roll down a ramp?
- Spud Weightlifting - how many rocks does each potato weigh?
- Tator Target - can a Tator hit the target in the middle when rolled?
- Spud Splashdown - how much splash can one potato make?
Such fun was had and it connected beautifully with the current Science Unit "Move It, Move It" where students have been exploring through play:
- how objects move
- how external factors may influence the movement of an object
- using their senses to observe and explore the movement of objects
- engage in hands-on investigations and respond to questions about factors that influence movement
Mrs Clark came to judge one of the Olympic sessions and was very impressed with the answers given around the Potato athletes' performances. "The shape affected how well they rolled." "How we roll it means it can go further." "If it's heavier it will make more splash."

Updating Student Information
During the school year, there can be occasions when it is important that we make immediate contact with parents. We are unable to do this if our information is not current. Please help us to provide care and consideration for your child by updating your family records whenever a change occurs.
- If there is a change in your emergency contact phone number, email, or other emergency contact persons details.
- If you change your address.
- If any significant changes occur with regard to your child/children's health or medical details e.g. Health Plan or medication.
- If there are any changes regarding custody or access to your child/children.
- If you feel we should know of any other changes which relate to your child.
Reporting Absent Student
It is important that you contact the school before 9.00am if your child is absent for any reason.
Options:
• Qparent app
• Or send an email to admin@camphillipss.eq.edu.au and include your child’s classroom teacher.
Upcoming Father’s Day Stalls
The annual school Father’s Day stall will again be open to allow children the chance to select and purchase gifts for a special person in their lives whether it be Dad or Pop or Uncle Bob or maybe Mum or a family friend. Gifts are all priced at either $5 or $10. Cards will be available for $1. Shoppers are welcome to purchase several gifts and/or for several people.
This is a great opportunity to allow independence in selecting an item and an opportunity to practise skills of purchasing (like at the real shops) and provide families the convenience of shopping for a special item without a trip to the crowded shopping centre all while raising money for the school.
Classes will be timetabled to visit either of these days Tuesday 27th & Wednesday 28th August - watch for details from the class teacher. If students are away or forget their money when their class visits, they will have the chance to shop on Thursday 29th August.
What Do I Do?
Please send along cash in a sealed envelope or zip lock bag with:
• Child's name and class
• List of who they are buying for (e.g. Dad $15, Papa $5, Grand-Dad $5)
We will also remind you in the next newsletter as well.
Father’s Day Stall Co-Ordinator Volunteer Needed
We are still looking…. Can you help be our Father’s Day Stall Co-Ordinator?
Each year, this is one of our wonderful shopping days we have that our students can come and independently buy for that special person in their life. It is a fund-raising opportunity for our Aerobics & Dance group, and we are looking for someone who take on this role for the next 2-3 years.
All systems are in place, and you will be taught by the best, (Kerri) how it works seamlessly. This year, everything is already ordered and being prepared, so this is a perfect time to step in and see how it works.
Maybe have a friend join you and you can do it together.
It is a very rewarding volunteer role and other than the 3 days of having fun with the students in their shopping time, it can work around your time availability.
Please contact Lee-Anne or Kerri on admin@camphillpandc.com.au

We continually review suppliers and products offered and plan and order far in advance to keep prices as competitive as possible whilst maintaining quality.
Whenever possible we support local businesses with local production and many items are made in Brisbane.
Our largest supplier has not passed on their rising costs for many recent years, however from the start of Term 4 some items will include price increases.
We are also very lucky to have great systems in place to allow our families the option to buy and sell quality second hand uniform items through the uniform shop.
As always, please email any questions you may have and I will do my best to help.
