Student Free Day – Friday 30 August 2024
A reminder that Friday 30 August is a student free day. No school staff will be at the school site on this day.
Student and Staff Wellbeing
As with the rest of the wider community, we are currently seeing a lot of sickness amongst our students and staff. We have been notified during the past couple of weeks of students with the following: whooping cough, influenza A, chicken pox, covid, gastroenteritis and rotavirus. For more information about these illnesses can be found on the Queensland Health website.
If your child is sick, we ask that you keep them at home. It can be very upsetting for all when a student comes to the office feeling sick and crying, and inform staff, they were sick before school. If your child becomes sick at school, we will contact you and ask you to collect them or organise someone to collect them. Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities or staff to care for sick children at school. Thank you for your understanding and support in caring about everybody’s wellbeing.
2025 Parent Requests
A reminder that all completed 2025 Consideration for placement forms are due back to school by Monday 9 September. It is important that completed forms are emailed to the dedicated email address 2025Requests@camphillipss.eq.edu.au, as only these will be considered. When completing the form, please remember that we are unable to consider requests for specific teachers.
In mid-August, all families were emailed a letter regarding parent requests for 2025 and the 2025 Consideration for placement form for parents/carers to complete if they would like to provide additional information for staff to consider when making classes for 2025. Whilst this is optional, if you would like to make a request and cannot locate the email please contact the school office and they will organise another form to be sent.
Kind regards,
Jane Tuckett
School Principal
Junior Campus - Deputy Principal
It has been a very busy two weeks on the Junior Campus with lots of events and learning happening. Last week was Book Week and I popped down to watch the students parading down the catwalk in costume with book in tow. There were some amazing costumes on display (teachers included). It was wonderful to see parents in the audience enjoying the spectacle. Thank you Mrs D for all the hard work that goes on behind-the-scenes for Book Week.
Year 2 students enjoyed a talk by Mrs Kate Clark (Year 2 parent) who is a Safety Hero for Energex and delivers Safety Taslks to students around being safety heroes at home around electricity. Our Preps and Year Ones will also be learning about being a safety hero at home in a couple of weeks. You can jump on the website to learn more, download fact sheets and play the interactive activities at home with your child at www.ergon.com.au/network/safety/kids-safety/heroes-at-home
Nut Aware School
Please be aware that the school is a Nut Aware School and we aim to reduce allergens wherever possible. Reducing allergens reduces the risk of anaphylaxis. It is very important that students DO NOT share food and that parents consider what food items they send to school as we work together to reduce allergens.
Friendships
Making friends and building friendships can be difficult for children (and indeed, even adults). In the office, we come across these issues on a daily basis. If your child is experiencing difficulty making friends, I have attached some tips by Ashley Cullins, author of BigLifeJournal.com for your information. The website is full of information and downloadables, as well as age-appropriate journals.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL
All parents and caregivers must be vigilant with the supervision of their children before and after school. On the Junior Campus, students and siblings are to remain with their family member outside classrooms until the classrooms are opened at 8:50am. Teachers are busy setting up for the day and are not responsible for the supervision of students. School playgrounds and equipment are out of bounds during these times and are only to be used during school time under the supervision of a staff member. Under no circumstances is it possible for a parent to leave their child unsupervised before or after school. There has been a number of incidents where students have been injured climbing on fences and running on uneven ground. Please discourage your child from doing this.
Student Free Day
A reminder that this Friday is a Student Free Day (code for long weekend for our students and staff). Enjoy the stunning weather and the extra day off school.

During Science Week a small group of our Science savvy Year Five students attended a half day excursion at Cavendish Road High School. The students were involved in three ‘labs unlocked’ STEM sessions run by senior teachers, Year 12 Senior STEM leaders and Year 10 Stem Girl power representatives.
When reflecting on the day, this is what the students had to say about the investigations they took part in.
Session 1: Chemical analysis of Whale Snot
We learned that drones are used to collect Whale Snot from the blow hole and scientists examine the Whale Snot to determine how sick or healthy the ocean and the whales are. Determining the health of a whale takes many steps.
Session 2: Engineering Problem Solving – Koala bridge building
We learned about problem solving, as we were challenged to make a bridge to help koalas safely cross Boundary Road. Our engineering project was to make the bridge using toilet roll centres, rubber bands, string, pipe cleaners and pasta.
Session 3: Making in our ‘Maker-space’
We had to make a wind turbine and to see how much electricity our turbines made. Most groups made their turbines using three long blades, but we used six shorter blades which made the turbine spin faster and made more electricity. Our group won the competition with a speed of 51km per hour. The group who came second got a speed of 48km per hour. Our prize was a hand powered generator.
During the day we also learned about what a high school science laboratory is like and all the important rules that keep us safe in the laboratories. We learned about trial and error, and we also discovered that if we think we did something well, we could still wake up the next day and find another way to solve a problem.

Knives at school
Some students have been bringing knives to school in their lunchbox to cut up fruit and other food items. In most instances these knives have been plastic (including the “kiwi fruit knife/spoon”), wooden or metal butter knifes; however, even though they may appear a “safe option” by some parents, they still pose a risk to the safety of our students.
Parents and carers are advised not to send butter knives or fruit knives in lunchboxes, or knife tools for craft purposes. Some alternatives, rather then sending a knife in your child’s lunch box include:
• Cutting up the fruit at home.
• Cutting the kiwi fruit in half and only send a teaspoon for your child to eat it with.
• Putting the spread on the food item (e.g. bread, crackers) at home\
• Place the spread into a container for your child to dip the food item into.
• Let your child eat the food item whole.
If your child requires a knife-type tool for craft purposes, you child’s teacher will provide and supervise the use of this tool.
Please remember, there is no good reason for a student to ever have a knife at school.
QParents – now available for all year levels
Parents, we hope you are enjoying the access to student information and functionality provided by the QParents app. Thanks especially to the parents who are using the app to record absentee information. If you haven’t already, register using the invitation code that has been emailed to you.
Parents who have gone into the "Low Document Approval" please head into either office to finalise your approval, bringing in relevant documents.
QParents allows parents to connect instantly with our school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:
• Attendance and absence details
• Academic report cards
• Viewing and paying invoices
• Viewing and updating personal student details
• Coming soon - Providing consent for excursions and incursions
Updating Student Information
During the school year, there can be occasions when it is important that we make immediate contact with parents. We are unable to do this if our information is not current. Please help us to provide care and consideration for your child by updating your family records whenever a change occurs.
- If there is a change in your emergency contact phone number, email, or other emergency contact persons details.
- If you change your address.
- If any significant changes occur with regard to your child/children's health or medical details e.g. Health Plan or medication.
- If there are any changes regarding custody or access to your child/children.
- If you feel we should know of any other changes which relate to your child.
Reporting Absent Student
It is important that you contact the school before 9:30 am if your child is absent for any reason or will be late to school. This includes absences for a school event where the students make their own way to the event.

Earlier this term a team of Year 6 students, led by designers Olivia G and Jasper, won a preliminary competition to paint two fibreglass goats to be displayed at this year’s Ekka.
Their thoughtful and imaginative creations were recently on display in the Agricultural Hall at this year’s Ekka. Well done Oliva G and Jasper!
Singfest
On Friday 23 August, a group of our wonderful choristers from our Senior Choir attended Singfest at the Old Museum. Singfest is an annual massed choral event for state school primary students from Years 4–6 and secondary students from Years 7–12 in the Metropolitan region. Over 1,500 students participate in this event each year from state schools across the region. Our students have been learning the songs with Mr Griffin and participated in a concert at the end of the day for parents and community members.
Here is what some of our student had to say about the event.
It was very fun and I enjoyed it very much and I hope we do it next year. The teachers were very nice and some of them were funny. I think we learned a lot! Evie S 4B
One thing I really enjoyed was singing 'It was a dark and stormy night' because the lyrics are beautiful, and I loved the way we sang it as one big choir! Emily C 5B
Sing fest was amazing! It was the best part of my week! Hannah M 6D
I thought that Singfest was really fun and was a good experience performing and singing. I loved going and trying Singfest for the first time and I would go again next year. Amelie F 5A
I enjoyed Singfest because Mr Gillard was really fun and gave us great advice about how to make singing sound better. Adelaide K 5D
I loved Singfest, It was so much fun because: 1. The conductor was really funny and nice (like Mr Griffin) 2. It was fun playing tag (and Uno) with everyone 3. I liked watching everyone (even Mrs Wills) do the grey squirrel dance, it was so funny 4. I liked how there was toilets everywhere so you can use them anytime (I liked the chains to flush the toilets) 5. I liked singing with the other school (Wishart) and last of all 6. Thank you for using up your time to take us on an awesome excursion to The Old Museum for Singfest. I look forward to doing it next year Lily R 4C
The day was fun and we learnt two new songs along with the four Mr Griffin had taught us. We had a very funny conductor and giggled watching our parents and Mrs Wills perform actions to one of the songs. Thank you, Mr Griffin, Mrs Scott, Mrs Farley and Mrs Rook, for their support on the day. Jenna V 5B
I think Singfest was a really wonderful experience. It was good to sing with all the children. The Old Museum was a very beautiful place and the gardens were really pretty. I am glad that I got to play in the nice gardens during breaks. I enjoyed performing in front of my parents and teachers and showing everyone what we learnt. Anaika R 4A
Instrumental Music Program
Thank you to the families of children in Year Two and Year Three who sent in an application to join the Instrumental Music program in 2025. We are no longer accepting applications.
On Thursday 29 August we will be holding an information session from 3:30 – 4:15 pm in the Senior Music Room for the parents of the current Year 2 and 3 applicants. If you have any questions about the program, we invite you to come along to find out how our program works.
Performance Uniform
Our school is very fortunate to have a diverse and robust music program. We have string orchestras, concert bands, four choirs, guitar groups, a ukulele group and recorder band. When our musicians perform there is a performance shirt that our musicians wear as part of their uniform. These shirts are available from the uniform shop. They are worn with the navy-blue school shorts/skort, black shoes and white socks. If your child is a member of any of these groups and you need a music shirt, please visit the lovely ladies in the uniform shop for assistance.
Thank you to everyone for supporting our Book Week fun this week. A special thanks to Sam for her assistance, and our groundsmen for their set up of stage and backdrop.
So many teachers and teacher aides joining in the dress up fun to continue the "book talk" in a different arena.
All the time we spend teaching children to read, it is great to spend some time celebrating the rewards of being able to read and enjoy the magic of reading!! We counted over 300 names signed on for P-2 parades on Wednesday, and have received some lovely feedback from parents.
We have copies of CBCA short-list and winning books in both Libraries for display this week. Pop in and have a read! They will be available for loan next week.
To go to our Library list of short-listed books follow the below link.
PREP and YEAR 2.
‘PERSISTENCE IS MY FRIEND.’
‘I WONT PUT IT OFF AGAIN.’
When you see that your child has persisted at something he/she found frustrating and was successful as a result, make sure you tell them that hard work and effort in doing something you do not feel like doing, leads to greater success.
Bruno Mars supports this in his catchy song “Don’t Give Up”

Father’s Day Stalls
We hope your child has a lovely time shopping for those special people in their lives at the Father’s Day stalls this week. To everyone, we wish you an absolute wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday.
A massive Thank You to Kerri Rook. Since 2016, over nearly 9 years, as a volunteer, she has planned, shopped and organised 17 Father’s Day & Mother’s Day stalls for your child’s shopping experience.
Father’s Day Stall Co-Ordinator Volunteer is still Needed
We are still looking…. Can you help be our Father’s Day Stall Co-Ordinator?
Each year, this is one of our wonderful shopping days we have that our students can come and independently buy for that special person in their life. It is a fundraising opportunity for our Aerobics & Dance group, and we are looking for someone who take on this role for the next 2-3 years.
All systems are in place, and you will be taught by the best, (Kerri) how it works seamlessly. This year, everything is already ordered and being prepared, so this is a perfect time to step in and see how it works.
Maybe have a friend join you and you can do it together. It is a very rewarding volunteer role and other than the 3 days of having fun with the students in their shopping time, it can work around your time availability.
Please contact Lee-Anne or Kerri on admin@camphillpandc.com.au
