Spring Vacation
It is surprising how quickly a school term can go, especially you are busy and having fun. I would like to thank everyone for their continued support while I have been Principal during the past term.
While I have missed working on the Junior Campus every day and sharing the excitement of what the younger students have learnt, I have enjoyed my time on the Senior Campus getting to know the Year 3-6 staff and students. It has been great to watch the care the students show for each other and the way the older students help the younger. I’m still amazed every time I watch them play handball…their skill, their kindness towards one another, their manners and consideration for one another. Truly a credit to their parents and caregivers and families.
In Term 4, I will continue as Acting Principal until Mrs Driver returns. Mrs Driver is taking longer to recover than expected; however, she is recovering and will be returning sometime during next term. Mrs Genevieve Clark will continue as acting Deputy Principal on the Junior Campus.
On behalf of the school staff, I would like to wish you all as safe spring vacation and looking forward to seeing your children back at school on Monday 30 September.
Planning for 2025 – Parent Requests and Other Information.
Thanks to the many parents who have forwarded additional information for us to consider when making classes for 2025. We are currently collating this information to use next term.
Thanks also to the families who have let us know that they will not be returning in 2025 as this information helps us to plan for our staffing needs and allows us to consider friendships in classes. I would like to wish
If your child will be attending Prep next year and you haven’t already enrolled them, please contact the office immediately as classes are filling fast and our “Come and Play” sessions start next term.
Kind regards,
Jane Tuckett

Junior Campus - Deputy Principal
We did it! Another term of teaching and learning completed and a lovely break coming up for all. Later starts, no school lunches to make and some Netflix. That's just the teachers. I hope our families have a chance to slow down and enjoy some family time over the holidays. I am off to the coast to enjoy some time with children and grandchildren (and some good books and beach time as well).
CREATIVE DANCE CARNIVAL
Wow! There were some impressive costumes and some even more impressive dancing on show at the P-2 Creative Dance Carnival yesterday. It was fun to watch our smaller dancers present what they have been learning in their Creative Dance lessons to the gathered (and very aprpeciative) crowd. Particularly impressive was the singing by some Preps of "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi.
When I walked around the carnival, students were enjoying tossing coins at the Lob-a-Choc, picking lucky lollipops, swinging a club, buying fairfloss and sipping on icecream spiders. It was a massive undertaking and I want to thank Mrs Lloyd and her staff for all the behind-the-scenes work that went on to make the days run so well.
SWIMMING
It's that time of year again - the pool is ready. Are you? Families received a letter informing them that all Preps-Year 6 will be swimming in Term 4 and what students need to bring with them to the pool. Bathers, sunshirt, a cap, towel and goggles (optional) inside a waterproof bag. This makes the trip to and from the pool so much easier. If you are able to volunteer for your child's class, please contact your classroom teacher. A reminder that Swimming is a compulsory part of the Australian Curriculum.
FREE ACTIVITIES OVER THE HOLIDAYS
Looking for something to do that won't break the bank. Brisbane City Council has plenty of free activities for children over the Spring break. Head to:

YEAR ONE FIRE VISIT
Thanks to Camp Hill Fire Station for their annual Year One Fire Education visit today. Year One students listened to a Fire Safety Talk and got to see how the fire appliance works. Students also got to hold the fire hose (water included!) We were provided with some booklets "Be Prepared" with various activities that students have been doing in class.

English – Speaking Tasks:
There is a buzz around the school at the moment as students in all year levels can be heard preparing for, practising and presenting their persuasive speaking tasks for English. It is a privilege to listen to presentations in many classrooms and witness the confidence as students speak in front of their classmates. When planning the term 3 English units, teachers have strived to create links with other learning areas where possible. It’s impressive to see how the connections between learning areas serves to deepen knowledge and engage the students in purposeful and authentic contexts. Below is a list of the focus for speaking tasks in English and the link with other learning areas.
- Preps are retelling a personal experience and describing how it made them feel.
- Year 1s are explaining how to play a board-game made in maths and expressing an opinion. (curriculum connection with Mathematics)
- Year 2s are express an opinion for a type of technology from the past or the present. (curriculum connection with HASS)
- Year 3s are expressing a preference and opinions about a school rule. (curriculum connection with HASS)
- Year 4s are presenting a persuasive argument about the sustainable use and management of single use plastics at our school. (curriculum connection with HASS and Digital Technology)
- Year 5s are presenting a persuasive speech to convince an audience that the school community needs a new facility, service or activity. (curriculum connection with HASS)
- Year 6s are presenting an argument in the form of a vlog on a significant issue in the community, in order to convince the local government councillor that action needs to be taken. (curriculum connection with Health)
Parents have spoken about conversations being heard between siblings at home around the commonality of speaking tasks.
In term 4, all year levels will have a focus on writing a narrative text.
FOOD ALLERGENS
Many people in our community and many students at our school have various food allergies and intolerances. There are a range of foods that some of our students are allergic to or have an intolerance for. These include: eggs, milk, wheat, gluten, strawberries, peanuts and other nuts. While some students’ food allergies and intolerances can be managed with them not eating food containing that allergen, others cannot. For some students, just touching the food they are allergic to can trigger a reaction or even anaphylaxis.
During eating time at school, students will often sit very close to their friends (often with lunch boxes touching). This can increase the risk of accidental exposure to food allergens (such as nuts), especially for our younger students who are still learning how to manage their allergy. While we don’t have food bans at schools, together, we can reduce common food allergens (such as nuts) at school and in doing so help reduce the risk of accidental exposure. To help us reduce the risk of some of our students being accidentally exposure to food that they are allergic to please:
• consider the food products you send to school
• be aware of communication from your child’s class teacher regarding food allergies in your child’s class
• Talk with your child about not sharing their food
• Talk with your child about food allergies and reactions by others
• Encourage your child to wash their hands before and after eating, particularly if eating nuts

Southside Senior Music Workshop
Last week, a group of senior students from the Strings and Band programs attended a three-day Music Workshop at the Sleeman Centre at Chandler. Students and teachers from multiple schools in Brisbane attended. For three days these dedicated musicians worked to refine their skills, culminating in a concert showcasing the work that the students had undertaken. It was amazing! The parents who were able to attend the concert were incredibly impressed and the teachers who accompanied our Camp Hill musicians, were overwhelmingly proud of their achievements.

Instrumental Music Program
Thank you to the parents who attended the information session for 2025 Instrumental Music Program last Thursday. The information shared in the session was sent to all families via the email addresses given on the application forms.
Performance Uniform
Our school is very fortunate to have a diverse and robust music program. We have string orchestras, concert bands, four choirs, guitar groups, a ukulele group and recorder band. When our musicians perform there is a performance shirt that our musicians wear as part of their uniform. These shirts are available from the uniform shop. They are worn with the navy-blue school shorts/skort, black shoes and white socks. If your child is a member of any of these groups and you need a music shirt, please visit the lovely ladies in the uniform shop for assistance.
This term, Step Up has initiated another new program involving all children in the five Prep classes. The program was called Prep Boost as its aim was to boost the children’s literacy skills through small group work. Each class came to Step Up three times a week for intensive work on sound/symbol relationships differentiated for each child’s learning journey.
Throughout the program, it was amazing to see so many children improve in their ability to identify sounds, correctly write sounds, segment words into sounds and blend sounds together to make words. They also improved in manipulating sounds within words including deleting sounds and inserting sounds to make new words. Dictation sentences were also used to practise writing what they had read. Reading the sounds and spelling the sounds go hand in hand together.
This is from the Decodable Readers Australia Online Library which all students have access to for reading online.

Correct letter formation associated with the sound /a/ represents.
Remember letters don’t make sounds – letters represent sounds.
Verbal instructions are cues for children to remember how to create the letters which represent the sounds.
Term 4 PE – Swimming
Next term all of our Prep – Year 6 students will participate in swimming as part of their PE curriculum.
Students will come to the pool with a range of experiences - from swimming lessons at an early age, to those with limited exposure to water.
The swimming unit in Term 4 focuses on swim activities, based on the National Swimming and Water Safety Framework. Children will learn a range of swimming methods and also prepare for the swimming carnivals, at the end of the term.
Parent helpers are requested for us to meet supervision ratios and for productive lessons. Prep – Year 3 classes, would require in water support. We usually require:
Prep – Year 2 - Two parent volunteers per class per lesson.
Year 3 – Year 6 - One parent volunteer per class per lesson.
If you are able to help support, please contact your child’s classroom teacher to register details of your support. Unfortunately, no younger siblings or other children will be allowed at the pool for safety reasons.
Students will need:
• Swimmers
• Sun shirt / rashie
• Swimming cap (available for purchase from uniform shop)
• Goggles (Optional but recommended)
• Towel
• Water proof bag (to carry wet swimming gear and towel home)
Please ensure all swimming belongings are clearly marked with your child’s name. Writing their name on their cap is also helpful.
Swimming will start Tuesday 8th October (Week 2 – Term 4).
Year 5/6 Interschool Gala Day Sport
Recently our Year 5 and Year 6 students had the opportunity to participate in the Lytton district cluster interschool sport gala day. Children had the opportunity to select a preferred sport, which included Basketball, Netball, Oz Tag, Soccer and AFL.
Our students performed extremely well at their chosen sports, with many teams being highly competitive against other schools and winning many games.
Our students represented our school well, with demonstrations of exceptional behaviour and fairness displayed throughout all sports and venues.
Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 Cricket Academy
At this stage, a gala day for our cricket academy teams is still in progress. Training will resume as normal for terms from Weeks 1-3 in Term 4. The remaining Term 4 training schedule is:

Australian National Championships
This year, the Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School Sports Aerobics transitioned to participating in competitions organised by FISAF (Federation of International Sports Aerobics and Fitness). The transition has been a resounding success with eighty-one Year students across ten teams involved in the program. All of the students demonstrated significant improvement over the season with four teams qualifying to compete at the Australian National Championships. The Championships were held on Saturday, 30 August at the Gold Coast Sport & Leisure Centre, Carrara with over 80 schools from four states represented. We are extremely proud to announce the following results:
Comets (Year 3/4) - Gold
Stars (Year 3/4) - Silver
Rubies (Year 5/6) - Bronze
Sparklers (Year 4) - 12th
Congratulations to all our teams on their fabulous performances.

Year 2 ‘Come and See’
In Term 4, we are offering all Year 2 students the opportunity to attend two ‘Come and See’ trial sessions as an introduction to Sports Aerobics. During the sessions, which will have a focus on fun and team spirit, students will learn some foundational skills and simple choreography.
Sessions will be held during playtime at first break in Weeks 2 and 3. Exact days will be advised early next term and will be organised so as to avoid clashes with other extra-curricular activities such as choir.
If your child would like to attend the ‘Come and See’ sessions, please follow the link below or scan the QR code to register their details. Registrations close Wednesday, 2 October. Participation in ‘Come and See’ does not commit students to future participation in the Sports Aerobics program.
Registrations close Wednesday, 2 October.
Final payments due by Friday, 4 October 2024.
Year 3 – 6 Development Program
For the first time ever, we are offering a four week ‘development’ program. The program is open to all students in Years 3 to 6, whether they have participated in Sports Aerobics before or not. For those students who have participated in the competition program this year, it gives them an opportunity to build on their progress. For those new to Sports Aerobics, it gives them the chance to see what Sports Aerobics is all about without having to commit to a competition team.
Sessions will be run by our qualified Sports Aerobics coaches and supervised by a member of teaching staff. Students will work on fitness while developing the strength and skills necessary for Sports Aerobics.

When you catch your child being persistent, say:
“You didn’t give up!”
“You kept trying, great effort.”
“Making extra effort helps you learn.”
“You sure didn’t give up easily.”
“Your effort is very important because it helps you succeed.”
“See. Persistence pays off.”
“I can see you understand that to be successful, you sometimes have to do things you don’t feel like doing.”
“The more you practice, the better you become.”
