Term 4
We have certainly had a very mixed fortnight with the constantly changing weather. Fortunately the school days and a night event were finished before the storms hit Camp Hill.
Celebration of Music Night
I had the pleasure of attending our most recent night event – our school’s annual Celebration of Music. As most of you may be aware our school offers a range of Instrumental Music programs, including, Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Guitar and Ukulele, and opportunities for students to join a number of choirs. The Celebration of Music night, provides our instrumental music and choir students the opportunity to celebrate what they have learnt during the year.
It truly was a magical night – from the smiles of faces of the students and their parents/carers, to the sounds that flowed from the instruments and students’ mouths. It was a night that for some of us that not only created new memories of how much our students have grown, but brought back memories of our own childhood when we learnt an instruments or were in a choir, and being proud of what we achieved. Happy memories. Congratulations to our instrumental music students, our choirs, your teachers and the other staff for a magnificent night and thank you for letting us celebrate your musical achievement with you. Please continue to create happy memories for us all to share.
Cassowary or Curlew?
I owe everyone a big apology for mistakenly typing that we had “Cassowaries” in our school grounds, when in fact the birds I meant to type was Curlew. (I do know the difference, so unsure why I made this area. If we had cassowaries in the school grounds I’m sure we would have been in the news and the media would have been visiting. When I spoke to some Year 3-6 students before school about my error and asked for reasons about why it had to be incorrect, they were able to tell me that cassowaries lived in North Queensland, were very dangerous and possibly even endangered.
South East Queensland Birds is a great brochure containing photos of some local birds, including the curlew. “9 curious cassowary facts” is an interesting read and has a photo of amusing cassowary road signs.
Senior Playground
If you have visited our Senior Campus you may have noticed that the Senior Playground is finished and the fencing has been removed. (This means no more reports of handballs being lost under the fence.) Teachers have been explaining/showing students how to use the equipment appropriately and lunchtime supervision is being adjusted to include the playground. We ask that if you a visiting the school outside of school hours (ie: attending before/after school or weekend programs or events) please do not allow your children to play on the Senior Playground or any other school playgrounds.
2025 Classes
Staff have been organising students into classes for 2025. We are currently reviewing the classes to ensure all students have a friend (or somebody from their current class) with them and that parent requests were taken into account. Due to a variety of reasons, it is not possible to meet all parent requests. Unfortunately due to the large number of requests received, it is not possible to contact everyone regarding the outcome of their request. Except for our new (2025) Preps, class lists will not be finalised until the start of the 2025 school year.
Strategic Planning – 2025
Each year, all schools, as part of the school performance planning are required to develop an Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) and a budget. The AIP outlines the school’s explicit improvement agenda for the next 12 months, in relation to the priorities in the School Strategic Plan, and provides information about the actions to be undertaken and how these will be evaluated. These documents are developed based on departmental direction, the School’s Strategic Plan (which was based on the previous school review) and a range of available data, including students’ level of achievement, school opinion surveys and other school/student results. Education Queensland provides schools with guidance and a range of tools to support their development.
To plan for the 2025 school year, and commence the development of our 2025 AIP and budget (including plans for consultation), the leadership will be meeting off site on Friday 22 November. This will ensure we have a productive and uninterrupted day. On this day, Mr Dean Murphy, Principal from Coorparoo State School has kindly agreed to come to Camp Hill for the day. Mr Murphy will be based on the Senior Campus and will be supported by Mrs Kelsey King on the Junior Campus. Principals often enjoy visiting other school and I hope that Mr Murphy will enjoy his day at Camp Hill. Mr Murphy has indicated that he will probably spend much of his time here visiting our classrooms, and talking with students and staff. I hope that everyone helps to make Mr Murphy feel welcome.
Kind regards,
Jane Tuckett
School Principal
Junior Campus - Deputy Principal
It never ceases to amaze me how much energy our little students have, even in the hot weather we have been having lately. It is definitely a blessing to have all our classrooms air-conditioned and such a relief for everyone to be back in the cool after each break. You can see them all sighing with relief when they get inside! (Teachers too!) Cool classrooms improve not only working conditions for our staff but also students experience improved comfort, focus and concentration. And we can't forget that our P and C played a large part in ensuring our classes are "cool". It is initiatives like these (and the new playgrounds being built) that makes being part of your child's P and C so worthwhile. Every fundraising venture goes back directly into our school. If you would like to join the P and C, please consider coming along to a monthly meeting and becoming a member. The motto of the P and C is "Just One Thing". If you can do just one thing towards volunteering, whether it be in the tuckshop, the uniform shop or any of the fundraising events during the year, it would make a world of difference to their fundraising efforts. They meet the third Tuesday of every month at 7pm in the Nicole Carey Building. Details on our website under Community. You can download a membership form there as well.
YEAR ONE MBEEC EXCURSION
This Tuesday and Wednesday it was the Year One students turn to visit the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre held within Moreton Bay. They participated in the Habitat Heroes programme exploring Moreton Bay, learning about living things and how they can protect them. They got to go on a boat and investigating habitats above and below the water. They sampled sediments from the sea floor and examined them under microscopes, using binoculars to discover the animals and human influences in the bay.
They also got to explore the foreshore, particularly the animals that live in the intertidal space. I heard stories about crabs, whelks, fish from some very excited students.

KEEP CALM AND HYDRATE!
I know I mentioned how wonderful it is to have cool classrooms but unfortunately, in this current heat, everywhere is .... very hot. Children must wear a hat when playing and we encourage them to drink plenty of water and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. However, we have had some instances where students have presented with a headache to the office, not having drunk much water throughout the day.
Dehydration can cause a child to become tired and irritable (and nobody wants that!) Their breathing rate increases as does their heart rate. Please encourage your child to empty their water bottle at least once (preferably into themselves and NOT on somebody else). And in case you wanted more information, I have attached a Urine Colour diagram for you. It is actually a great thing to teach your kids about.
YEAR TWO ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
I was lucky to come across some amazing Year 2 artists when visiting 2B recently. The students have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes in maths and have created some chalk drawings based on a 2D shape as a cross-curricular activity. There are some lovely combinations of colours in the picture below and it was interesting to watch the students decide on the colour for their background. Lots of deliberation went into some of the choices....lots.
In English, the Year 2's have also been analysing The Lorax and its characters to create a new narrative(it really does have the most wonderful sayings),
"I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues"
A tree falls the way it leans. Be careful the way you lean"
Your opinions and choices in life can lead to your downfall. So, don't be hasty or selfish. How you treat the Earth and others will come back to you."
and my personal favourite..
In Year One, they are writing imaginative recounts, based on the books "Peggy", "Mutt Dog" and "Alexander's Outing". Students are focusing on adding descriptive features to their writing, such as adjectives and better vocabulary choices, and using the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and HOW organisers to create a narrative.
I have included a link to "Alexander's Outing" if you would like to listen to it with your child.
In Maths, the Year Ones are focusing on skip counting and then using this knowledge to count money. I captured some 1A students busy skip counting money.

PREP SWIMMING
Our Preps have been participating in swimming lessons for the first time this year and I am pleased to say they are doing "swimmingly". The focus is on exits and entries, freestyle and submersion, based on the Royal Lifesaving Australia National Swimming and Water Safety framework. I went down to watch some Preps as they practised entering the water, swimming freestyle and exiting. Thank you to our parent volunteers (who I think were happy to be in the water on a 33 degree day)! Mr Bourke would probably liked to have joined them!

The Preps have also been busy writing a short text to retell a familiar story. They have been busy looking at "Handa's Surpise," "Tiddalik", "Mad Magpie", "The Elephant in the Dark", "Peeking Duck" and "Ping won't share". These are mostly First Nations books. The Education Department's Equity and Excellence school priorities around Culture and Inclusion states that "valuing First Nations cultuers and voice in our approach to engagement and learning is essential. Connections to culture enrich the learning of every student and strengthens all of our work."
One of the Dreamtime stories, "Tiddalik", is one of my favourites.
You would have noticed our beautiful jacaranda trees flowering in the school grounds over the past month. Prep Green made the most of the opportunity to spend some time outdoors on their purple carpet. It was the perfect place to do some counting with jacaranda flowers, making addition sums and patterns. You will also notice that the pictures below include some of our adorable wildlife (magpies) which, as we all know, are particularly present at this time of year.

We are all Math people at Camp Hill!
In the last newsletter I shared an outline of what is taught across the school in the new Mathematics curriculum which is to be implemented at Camp Hill in 2025.
An ongoing message around student success in mathematics, is the importance of developing positive dispositions. Research tells us that teacher and parental attitudes to math and towards student capabilities, influences a student's attitude as well as achievement. “Messages students pick up from their parents about math and their parents’ relationships with math can also change students’ math learning and achievement.” (youcubed 2023). Boaler (2016) emphasises that messages like “I was never any good at math” from parents are harmful and need to be replaced with positive messages like “Math is exciting and it’s everywhere”.
There is a really damaging myth that pervades – the idea that some people are born with a “math brain” and some are not. This has been resoundingly disproved by research but many students and parents believe this. It is really important to communicate “growth mindset” messages to students. Help them know that everyone is a math person and that the latest research is telling us that students can reach any levels in math because of the incredible plasticity of the brain.
In the survey, one Year 4 student who loves math obviously has an enthusiastic dad who communicates positive messages. When asked why they love math they said “I like the hard questions and when my dad says “Let’s have a math competition” and I can answer questions that he has to answer with a calculator, I find it really fun.” A Year 6 student who also loves math commented “My mother always helps me in math & makes it easy for me”.
At our staff meeting this week, teachers focused on ways that we can build this positive mindset for all students at Camp Hill. As a staff, teachers understand that establishing positive norms in the math classroom is seen as crucial to establishing a successful learning environment and banishing math anxiety (Boaler 2016). We looked closely at ways we can encourage the following seven norms outlined by Jo Boaler.
Positive Norms to Encourage in Math Class By Jo Boaler
1. Everyone Can Learn Math to the Highest Levels. Encourage students to believe in themselves. There is no such thing as a “math” person. Everyone can reach the highest levels they want to, with hard work.
2. Mistakes are Valuable. Mistakes grow your brain! It is good to struggle and make mistakes.
3. Questions are Really Important. Always ask questions, always answer questions. Ask yourself: why does that make sense?
4. Math is about Creativity and Making Sense. Math is a very creative subject that is, at its core, about visualizing patterns and creating solution paths that others can see, discuss and critique.
5. Math is about Connections and Communicating. Maths is a connected subject, and a form of communication. Represent maths in different forms eg words, a picture, a graph, an equation, and link them. Colour code!
6. Depth is much more Important than Speed. Top mathematicians, such as Laurent Schwartz, think slowly and deeply.
7. Math Class is about Learning not Performing. Math is a growth subject, it takes time to learn and it is all about effort.
PARKING IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS
For the safety of students, staff and visitors to our school, please do not park in a school grounds. A reminder that driving into the school ground to drop off or pick up students is not permitted. This is particular important on the Senior Campus as before and after school, children attending OSCH use the crossing in the school grounds to move from one section to the next. We also have a number of families accessing the pool for Swim Club via the Old Cleveland Road gate.
Students Exiting at the End of 2024
If you have not done so already, please inform our administration team via eamil that your student will not be returning for 2025.
Updating Student Information
During the school year, there can be occasions when it is important that we make immediate contact with parents. We are unable to do this if our information is not current. Please help us to provide care and consideration for your child by updating your family records whenever a change occurs.
- If there is a change in your emergency contact phone number, email, or other emergency contact persons details.
- If you change your address.
- If any significant changes occur with regard to your child/children's health or medical details e.g. Health Plan or medication.
- If there are any changes regarding custody or access to your child/children.
- If you feel we should know of any other changes which relate to your child.
Reporting Absent Student
It is important that you contact the school before 9:30 am if your child is absent for any reason or will be late to school. This includes absences for a school event where the students make their own way to the event.

Prep Uniform Fittings
If you have a little person who has been offered a place in Prep at our school for 2025 you have been advised that the bookings are now open for uniform shop fitting appointments.
This is a one-on-one chance to help your little person (and yourself!) get all organised to start their new schooling adventure. These appointments are available during November and December (until end of term) including a couple of Saturdays and again in late January just before school starts.
These appointments are needed as fittings cannot be accommodated in normal uniform shop opening hours at an already busy time of the year.
Purchasing hats and bags only however is possible.
Don't forget online orders can also be made for full range of items - please order under older sibling name and class and these orders will be delivered as usual for them to bring home.
Please email me if you have any questions.
Uniform Special Orders
Did you know that the uniform shop is able to place special orders for uniforms if the standard sizing’s or features require adjustment?
We have always offered a service where uniforms can be tailored however these are obviously ordered through an individualised system and will incur individualised prices and timelines for production.
Thanks to a suggestion from one of our parent community, we recently introduced long sleeved checked shirts/blouses and long sleeved sports polo shirts (see photos below) as inclusions in these special orders offerings.
More information is available through the uniform shop - please email or visit if you wish to discuss.
