What an amazing term it has been! Over the past couple of week we have been able to celebrate with our students, their achievements for the Semester. On behalf of the staff, I would like to congratulate our Year 6 students for being terrific role models to our younger students and demonstrating our four Cs – Commitment, Consideration, Courtesy and Co-operation. I would like to wish you all the best in the next stage of your life journey…high school.
I have attended a number of special parades and awards ceremonies where I had the privilege of shaking the hands of some very special students who received awards or certificates in recognition of their hard work and dedication to learning. Others received badges to recognise the start of their journey as Student Leaders in 2025. I would like to thank the parents and caregivers who also attended these events and celebrated along with us. I would also like to thank the staff involved in organising these events.

I would like to thank staff, parents/carers and students for their ongoing support and encouragement while I have been filling in as Principal while Mrs Driver was on leave. A special thank you to the P&C executive team for working with me and providing me with guidance when I need it. I was also very fortunate to have the support of an experienced leadership team and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. I am looking forward to working with Mrs Driver at the helm in 2025 when she returns as our full-time Principal.
I wish you all a very safe and happy holidays.
Kind regards,
Jane Tuckett
School Principal
I would like to thank our wonderful Camp Hill community for your support since I had the hit-and-run motor vehicle accident earlier in the year. The kindness and generosity shown during my period of recovery was very much appreciated. I have much to be grateful for.
I would like to thank all members of staff, in particular Mrs Jane Tuckett, for their steerage of our school. The handover to the new leadership team that included Mrs Tuckett (Acting Principal); Mrs Genevieve Clark (Acting DP/Junior Campus); Mrs Larissa Wills (DP/Senior Campus); Mrs Fiona Lloyd (DP/Inclusion) and Mrs Nicole Vokes (Head of Department Curriculum) was seamless and I know that our school community appreciated the smooth transition with such little notice.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to returning as the full time principal in 2025.

KEEP SUN SMART OVER THE HOLIDAYS
In Queensland, year-round sun protection is important for all children and young people.
Research shows that high ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure from the sun in childhood and adolescence significantly increases the risk of developing skin cancer.
Parents, families and the community play an important role to model and reinforce the 5 ways to be sun safe with children and young people.

We continue to celebrate the Narrative writing that was created in classes across the school during Term 4. In these English Units, students engaged with a variety of imaginative texts, they explored how language features, structures and literary devices are used by authors to suit the purpose and enhance meaning. This led to them creating their own narratives using ideas drawn from the texts they studied.
Narrative retell – How the birds got their colours by Marilyn -Prep Blue
A long long time ago in the Dreamtime there was a dove and all the birds were black. Next, the dove was dying and all of his friends gathered around.
Finally, all of the birds got splashed all over the colours of the rainbow.
Narrative retell – Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten, by Fade - 1D
The morning the Summers Family moved into their new house they felt at home. Each morning they watched the sun rise but next door there wasn’t any sun. Mr Wintergarten lived next door. At Rose’s house she had a carpet of flowers but not his house.
Rose heard stories about him. My Dad’s ball went over when he was a kid, said Naomi. “If your ball ever goes over forget it.” But, just then Rose’s ball went straight over. She told mum, “Well you can go get your ball, but he eats children. We’ll bring hot cakes.”
The gate squeaked. Rose knocked on the door. “Who the devil is that?”. “It’s me, may I look for my ball?” “No!” When Rose left he opened the curtains and patted his dog. He kicked the ball. Rose said, “Nice kick.” Mr Wintergarden said “Thank you.” He is taking out the bad plants so that children can play.
Narrative by Mia Flanagan - 2E
On the peaceful street of the Tickly Prickly Gum Trees there lived lots of Brown Bar-Ba Loot friends. The Brown Bar-Ba Loots loved playing together and eating the grickle grass.
One hot sunny day, a few of the Brown Bar-Ba Loots decided that they had enough of eating the grass and wanted to start and eat the nuts of the tickly prickly gum trees.
Narrative - The Lost Seed, by Maggie - 2B
Old crows were squeaking in the dark, small, gloomy town where the Lorax once stood. Many long years later the boy had still never planted the last beautiful Truffula seed for them all.
The boy decided that he’d saved it all these years and took it outside to plant it. He ran very fast and instantly dropped into the middle of nowhere and it slowly fell to the hard muddy ground. The poor boys ??? were watering. He was very upset.
Excerpt from Mulga’s Mistake by Sam - 5C
Mulga Bill got out of bed and read the morning paper. Bikes Bikes Bikes galore - these things are fast, and strong, and new! Get yourself a bike today, or be sorry that you didn't! "This may come in handy," thought Mr. Bill, staring at his horse. "Fast, strong, metal tools, what could possibly go wrong?" And with that he hurried into the dusty street, to get himself a bike. The sun was rising, painting the sky a deep golden colour. The owls were flying to their homes and birds were starting to tweet. Bill didn't care, he ran to the bike shop and pounded on the door. "Hello there," said a smart young man answering the door. "I need bike" Bill wheezed. All that running was tiring. "Certainly, you came to the right place, but may I ask, do you know how to ride?"
"NO, you may not ask, you may see, just one look at me will tell you that I ride bikes. Does a duck swim, does a cat fight! These are easy, so why do you ask if I ride. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!" Mulga yelled. "Alright alright, here's your bike." The man handed over a small strange two wheeled thing. Mulga sat down and grabbed the handlebars… and promptly fell over. The shopkeeper smiled and went back inside.
Excerpt from Narrative with a global connection by Olivia - 6D
"How could you!" Kiera screamed, a waterfall of tears streaming down her face. "You knew how much this school meant to me, and... and you’re just going to knock it all down. All you care about is money, isn't it?" Keira sunk down to the floor, her father looking helplessly down at her, lost for words.
"I'm sorry" he muttered.
"Sorry's not going to save the school!" she screamed back at him, as he slowly walked away down the cobbled pavement.
The mechanical rumble of engines drifted from across the road. Passers-by looked curiously out their car windows at the sad kids lined up around the school. No-one cared though. No-one cared that in a few minutes Mr. Greenwood and his bulldozer would be here. After that, the only thing left of Christchurch's state high school would be a pile of bricks and rubble.
Her usually delicious lamb pie tasted sour in Kiera's mouth. She was just wondering whether or not to throw it out when she heard it... The grinding of metal on metal. The screech of rubber on pavement. Kiera's stomach tightened when she realized what it was.
Excerpt from Narrative with a global connection by Hannah - 6D
Ambling slowly past, the tourist groups gazed at all the advertisements for, ' 3 In 1 trip up the Eiffel Tower! Limited time only!' And, ' Get your free croissants at Patisserie Pappillion!(Butterfly restaurant)' , all of them completely and utterly oblivious to the girl, curled into a tight ball, crying on an old, rickety, worn-down bench.
Her heart started racing in her ears as a soft feathery presence landed gently on her shoulder. Sophie whipped around, immediately regretting that decision as her aching hand smacked against the side of the chair. Sophie's rosy cheeks and brown eyes where still wet with fresh tears but the iridescent spectacles gave her away.
"Bella?" She asked, "How did you know I was here?"
"Do you see any other lost kids wearing a beret?" Bella laughed, "come on. Let's get back to class and get that hand looked at."
Numbly, Sophie followed her in a daze, questions racing through her head. Did she just make a friend? Did someone really care? As they arrived back at the bus, one brave, bold question stood out in all the chaos. Would she finally belong now?
2025 Prep Students
Prep students will receive a letter notifying them of their new class for 2025. Please ensure your address details provided on enrolment are accurate. Teachers and admin have done their upmost to place students in classes with at least one familiar peer. As you can appreciate the allocation of so many students into classes can prove challenging.
As the school and school offices will be closed over the Summer holiday period from 13 December 2024 through to 20 January 2025 please be reminded that any communication during this period will be addressed after 20 January 2025 when staff will be on hand to respond to any queries.
Booking for Prep 2025 uniforms are to be done online. They are the sole stockist of our school uniform, and cater for all your uniform needs, except shoes. Good quality 2nd hand uniforms are also available in-store. (under D Block, Senior Campus). The uniform shop has a complete list of what sports house your student is in, so you can purchase the sports coloured hat.

At the beginning of the school year, parents/carers are required to complete 2025 Administration of Medication forms. At this time, parents are also requested to provide current/new Action Plans. Both medical forms and medication for 2025 can be dropped off at the Junior and Senior offices on Monday 20th to Wednesday the 22nd between 9am and 3pm the week before school resumes.
Be aware you may drop this off on the first day of school, however there will be delays.
The word gratitude, derived from the Latin word gratia, means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness. It is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible.
With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves.
As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power.
The children have explored the concept of gratitude, what being thankful means and the many people, things and situations in our lives for which we are thankful.
Some of the responses from our students included…
My family. My bed Nature. Our dogs. Being happy
Going to a good school. My awesome teacher. Going swimming.
My big brother. Birthday cakes. Holidays. My bike.
Wishing everyone a relaxing, safe and happy summer break, for which we are grateful.
As 2024 draws to a close it is important that we acknowledge the incredible work our Music Team has put in to the many extra-curricular opportunities in our school.
Mrs Larissa Wills has been a powerful and dedicated advocate for our Camp Hill music programs for many years. Her encouragement and support for the Instrumental Music Programs (Strings and Band); choirs, other instrumental groups (guitar, ukulele, recorder) and external learning opportunities, has been steadfast. Her encouragement and her belief in the magic of music is powerful.
Mr Philip Griffin, who is not only an incredibly talented musician in his own right as a member of several bands, ensembles and performing groups, but is also an inspiration to many children of all ages here at Camp Hill. His willingness to give up hours before school each week and every lunch break to deliver so many opportunities for our children to engage in music is beyond commendable.
Our wonderful Strings teacher, Ms Rose Heratage who each year takes a group of year three students and, over the span of their primary school years, transforms them into competent musicians able to perform complex and moving pieces with confidence and joy. Her positivity and enthusiasm are contagious.
Mr Alan Spence, our Band teacher, who has been with us for a short time but has made an enormous impact on the students in the program. Despite the challenge of beginning a new school halfway through the year, he has turned the Beginner Band into a disciplined and successful group of performers and is passionate about getting the best from all of his students.
Ms Gina Irwin who has worked with the Junior and Intermediate choirs and the Recorder Band and has loved working with the children from Prep to Year Three. Ms Irwin is making a change to a new school for 2025 and while she is looking forward to a new adventure, she will miss every one of the students here at Camp Hill deeply.
Finally, to the amazing music students who work hard to improve their skill and knowledge every time they practice their instrument, come to rehearsal or perform a piece, well done and thank you for making Camp Hill such a wonderful community.
Library Matters
Thank you to all the Camp Hill families for hunting down all those hiding library books and home readers during the year. Organisation is a lifelong skill that all our children must learn.
A few strategies to assist include:
• Having a special place that each child’s library bag lives always – just like your toothbrush!
• Returning books to Library bag as soon as they have finished reading them.
• Write a message on your bathroom mirror in whiteboard marker so children can see each day what they have to pack. Colour code for each child! This works for Library bags, swimming, homework… It may get messy but it works & wipes off with ease.
If you find any books over the holidays pop them into your child’s bag and they can be returned in 2025. All loans stay on the system until returned.
We do have a reciprocal relationship with local libraries, just in case you think there may have been a mix up. I returned one Minecraft book to BCC Library last week that someone may have been looking for? Due to Privacy laws BCC can’t tell me who loaned it.
Last week a few classes logged in to their school Library accounts to check on their borrowing stats. Year 6 classes enjoyed looking up the first book they borrowed in Prep and seeing where their reading journey has taken them. The discrepancy between the highest and lowest number of books borrowed each year always amazes – some students borrow maximum loans every week – up to 70 or more books a year!! So many books, so little time!
Premier’s Reading Challenge Certificates have been handed out on parade to classes. Our Junior School continue to have the highest number of participants per class. Well done!!
Issue 8 Book Club was delivered this week. Thank you to families supporting Book Club. Our school earned over $1500 in resource credits this year from Book Club, enabling us to add new titles to our Libraries all year.
Having a personal book collection at home is also one of the factors found to correlate with higher reading achievement. Seeing parents participate in reading and value books is another. Dig out some family favourites and read them together.
Holiday Fun
Visit your local Library
Lots of fun at the BCC libraries this holiday! Enjoy an author event, cartooning workshops, STEM classes, Book Chats and more – all in air-conditioned bliss! Borrow some books to keep that reading progress soaring over the holidays. Remember there are lots of libraries in Brisbane and they often offer different activities so search a few around your area… Bulimba, Holland Park, Carina, Carindale, Garden City, Capalaba…
The Summer Reading challenge has commenced so join in to go in the draw to win a $50 Dymocks voucher. More information here: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/summer-reading
If you are visiting a new town visit their library. My boys enjoyed many Christmas activities at the Tin Can Bay library when they were younger, and were also able to borrow books as guest.
Our local independent bookshops also have holiday activities. Try Where the Wild Things Are in West End, or Riverbend. This list has a few farther afield if you need an adventure!
https://brisbanekids.com.au/bookshops-for-kids-in-brisbane/
Going on a road trip? Audio books and podcasts make great listening in the car. Borrow Box is available free if you are a BCC Library member. Research shows reading comprehension improves from listening to stories!
Street Libraries – donate your old books and swap for some new ones. There are lots around our area. This map shows just a few in our area. Search https://streetlibrary.org.au/find/ to find even more!
Storybox Hub – has over 500 stories to enjoy when you can’t put your hands on a book. Log in with our school code to access stories on any internet device – perfect while you are away on holidays or visiting family.
Remember this is a paid subscription service, not to be shared outside our school community. Login – chips Password – storybox.
Lifeline Book Fest – Jan 18th-27th Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Brisbane
If you have never been to a Lifeline Book Sale – don’t go on the first morning! Much quieter browsing and no queues after that first day. You can stock up on books, dvds, board games, video console games all for a fraction of new cost. High Quality section is priced per book, $2.50 section is just that! Check the $2.50 section first as often find same books in High Quality. Take a wheely bag, snacks, wipes, water bottle and your favourite bookworm. It is air-conditioned and coffee available! Plan to spend a few hours browsing!

From our P&C President
Thank you from the P&C Team!
This year has been a positive year for our P&C and school community. We welcomed three new members to our P&C executive team, who have brought fresh perspectives and energy to our initiatives. Additionally, we celebrated the completion of the senior playground, and the new prep playground will be ready when the new preppies arrive in the new year, which is an exciting milestone for our students!
Our event calendar has been packed with highlights, including the highly anticipated Camp Hill Fair, the ever-popular Trivia Night, and the vibrant Colour Run. We also added an annual movie night to our calendar.
We thank all our incredible volunteers for their time, efforts and generosity. Your contributions have been invaluable, from volunteering at events to donating items for raffles and the fair and all our bake stalls, purchasing raffle tickets, and attending our activities. These efforts directly support our school and strengthen our community spirit.
The P&C Executive Team would also like to thank all our sponsors, P&C staff, school staff, and school community for supporting the P&C. Your support has made this year’s achievements possible.
Thank you for making this year a success—we couldn’t do it without you!

On Thursday the 5th of December OSHC hosted their very first Christmas OSHC event! We had so much fun watching our community come in to get photos with our Santa and to hang out at such a busy time of year! We got to chat over breakfast and coffee thanks to our kitchen team and show off what we have been up to over the last few weeks.
We had the privilege of showing off our cooking club by sharing their gingerbread men that they perfected earlier in the term, and prepared fresh for our Christmas morning.
We also got to show off our art club's talents by handing out their baubles that they spent weeks making, to those who attended!
We want to give a big thanks to everyone that came in and made the morning so fun. And an extra thank you for all the amazing food drive and present donations we received over the term for those in need these holidays!

We hope you have a great holiday!
Love from the Camp Hill OSHC team
Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who donated home bake and/or their time to cook and serve 500 sausages and icy cups at the Senior Swimming Carnival last week. We couldn’t have done it without you! Amazing!
That’s a wrap on the Crocs until Term 1 Week 1 Club Night. Wishing all our members a safe and fun break.
We have a carnival early in Term 1 so please watch your emails for details on nominations for the Carnival leading into the term.
Sibling Races will be back in weeks 3 and 7 of Term 1.
We’d also like thank the following sponsors of our weekly BBQ - The Camp Hill Fruit Bowl, The Butcher Shoppe at Cannon Hill and Bakers Delight at Camp Hill.
